Many of the most memorable anime characters are defined through the immense power at their fingertips. By overwhelming their opponents with sheer force, they dominate battlefields and solidify their credibility in their respective stories.

However, some characters have power so considerable that they themselves fail to control it on occasion. The results of their negligence vary though often place themselves and their allies at grave risk. By identifying the instances in anime where this phenomenon has proven true, we can better appreciate how great power must be used with great responsibility.

10 Chopper's Monster Point Posed A Threat To His Own Comrades (One Piece)

Chopper's Monster Point form in One Piece.

Although Chopper was the Straw Hat crew's doctor, he was just as capable of causing harm as he was mending it. This was demonstrated during his battle against Kumadori at Enies Lobby, where he turned into a powerful juggernaut who put both Franky and Nami at risk. He even directly struck down the former and would have grievously injured him if not for his metallic body.

Fortunately, Tony has gained a more firm bridle over his monstrous ability since then. Nevertheless, it has the potential to imperil allies and adversaries alike.

9 Jugo Became A Completely Different Person In His Enhanced State (Naruto)

jugo in boruto

In his human form, Jugo was a peaceful and phlegmatic man who loyally followed Sasuke on his ventures across the world. In his enhanced state, however, he became a bloodthirsty monster whose only desire was to inflict harm on others.

He had little control over himself in this state and failed to even remotely resemble the man he usually was. Although his power renders him a formidable opponent on the battlefield, it prevents him from collaborating with his comrades and puts them in moderate danger when harnessing the full extent of his strength.

8 Sloth Was Too Fast For His Own Good (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Sloth in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Despite his burly appearance, Sloth was arguably the fastest member of the homunculus, rivaling even Fuhrer King Bradley himself. He was able to reach such velocities that Alexander Armstrong knew he would be doomed if caught directly in the monster's path.

However, there was a catch - he couldn't think nearly as fast as he could propel himself through the air. This made him a clumsy (albeit deadly) adversary who tried the state alchemists to their limit and forced them to fight an extremely aggressive battle so that he couldn't begin his charges.

7 Eri's Time Reversal Put Everyone Around Her At Risk (My Hero Academia)

Anime My Hero Academia Eri Sad Experiment

Eri had debatably the most powerful quirk in the My Hero Academia universe - the ability to reverse time. In theory, this enabled her to undo any injury or otherwise undesirable event, such as the wounds Midoriya suffered when using One For All at full power or restoring Mirio's quirk to its former glory.

However, she displayed an abysmal aptitude in controlling her power and put Deku at grave risk after Overhaul had been defeated. If it weren't for Aizawa's intervention, the young hero might have been erased out of existence.

6 Zenitsu Didn't Even Realize When He Was Using His Power (Demon Slayer)

Thunderbreathing first form

Zenitsu was an incredibly powerful demon slayer who possessed the ability to move at the speed of lightning. This was a skill he used to decimate dozens of demons, saving the life of an innocent villager and even defeating one of Rui's "siblings" during the assault on his hideout.

However, there's a catch. Not only is the blond hero limited to a single technique, but he can also only adequately harness his powers when unconscious. Often, he'll stand above a demon's carcass without the faintest idea that he killed them.

5 Ryuko Lost Control Of Senketsu & Transformed Into A Monster (Kill La Kill)

Ryuko kill la kill

Although Ryuko is a talented warrior in her own right, she has displayed a lack of discipline that endangers herself and others. After learning that Nui Harime was responsible for killing her father (and not Satsuki Kiryuin, as she had presumed), she flew into such a fit of rage that Senketsu began to drain her blood in excess.

This eventually caused him to mutate along with his user, transforming into a monstrosity that no one in Honnoji could contend with. Fortunately, Mako was nearby to bring her friend back from the brink of oblivion.

4 Escanor Has No Control Over The Nature Of His Curse (Seven Deadly Sins)

escanor deadly sins

Although Escanor is the most powerful member of the Sins, his strength is technically a curse. He has no control over how much force he exerts and is instead proportionately as strong as the time of day permits him to be (peaking at high noon and gradually weakening since).

Considering that he has no means of disabling his awe-inspiring abilities, the blistering heat emanating from his body has posed a threat to the knights of Liones working alongside him. It cooked them in their armor, forcing them to take it off and making them vulnerable to the demons in the Ten Commandments' army.

3 Ichigo Loses Control When Becoming A Hollow (Bleach)

Ichigo's Vasto Lorde Hollow form in Bleach.

When Ichigo enters his hollow state, his strength, speed, and durability are significantly enhanced. He was powerful enough to contend with and defeat Ulquiorra despite the man's ability to cause nuclear-level ceros with a single motion.

However, Ichigo enters a manic, sadistic state of mind when harnessing this skill and posed a serious threat to Uryu before corralling his might. Fortunately, he wouldn't lose himself again during his final fight with Aizen.

2 Boingo's Book Often Creates Prophecies Out Of His Control (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

Boingo from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

Boingo's Stand allowed him to read from a comic book that was intended to predict fate and give its user favorable results. Oftentimes, it would spell the Crusaders' excruciating death, instilling him with the confidence he needed to complete his mission.

The only problem was that his Stand's directions needed to be followed perfectly in order for its effect to work. Given his incompetence (and that of his partner), he never managed to play out the fate his ability predicted, and it usually backfired against him.

1 Nataku Son Was The Sixth Pillar & A Child With Fathomless Potential (Fire Force)

nataku failing to control his powers

After being abducted by Rekka and stricken with the infernal bug, Nataku unlocked his potential as the Sixth Pillar. This attracted the interest of the White-Clad, who attempted to abduct him in a raid on Hajima Industries.

With Ritsu having placed him at the center of a massive, blazing monstrosity and already struggling with his traumatic past, he unleashed the full extent of his abilities and nearly obliterated the entire city in a fiery detonation. Luckily, Charon was able to deflect it, and the attack simply defaced the surface of the moon instead. Once freed from his captors, Nataku relished his own weakness and hoped never to lose control again.
