Most fans discover anime at a young impressionable age when hope springs eternal and true love seems like the highest ideal one can achieve (except for maybe mastering the ability to perform ki-based energy attacks). Anime love has a complicated soap opera style quality, but generally, such romances end with a kiss and a happily ever after.

Due to this common trope, when anime couples break up, it is truly devastating. While it's not uncommon for a character to be spurned, once a couple figures out their relationship dynamic, it is generally expected that they will make everything work. Here are 10 anime breakups we're still not over.

10 Yamcha & Bulma (Dragon Ball Z)

Yamcha and Bulma were an item in the early episodes of Dragon Ball. They were a hit couple, and pairing was a smart move from the creators because it made both of them more interesting than if Bulma had somehow ended up dating Son-Goku.

They really had a fun dynamic too, each being a bit awkward in their own way but genuinely caring for one another and bringing out the best in each other. However, couples drift apart. Bulma found herself attracted to Vegeta, with whom she had a son, Trunks. The rest is history.

9 Guts & Casca (Berserk)

Guts is the main character of the series Berserk. He is an angry, violent, volatile and ill-tempered fighter who fights with a massively oversized sword and may or may not have some anger management problems (hint: he does). In all seriousness, Guts is one of the toughest humans alive, performing miraculous feats of strength and using battle as a way of processing the trauma he has encountered in life.

When he joined a mercenary troop called the Band of the Hawk, he quickly became promoted, where he and fellow captain Casca formed a rivalry. However, they came to respect one another in time. Guts eventually left the group, but when he returned, the two became lovers. A short while later, Casca was brutally attacked and driven insane, ending their relationship.

8 Shino & Jin (Samurai Champloo)

Jin is one of the three main characters in Samurai Champloo, a master samurai with glasses and a reserved demeanor that makes him stand out in contrast with his two traveling companions. Jin met a woman looking sad and helped her sell eels from her booth. This woman was Shino and the two instantly formed a connection. Later, he learned she was contemplating suicide, having been forced to work in a brothel because of her husband's debts.

After being denied entry from the brothel for being penniless, Jin worked out a way to see her. They spent a night together, and he helped her escape but did not follow. This is one of the saddest episodes of the series.

7 Akari & Takaki (5 Centimeters Per Second)

5 Centimeters Per Second is the sort of anime that once watched, can never be forgotten. This romantic drama follows Takaki Tono and Akari Shinohara, two children who meet when Akari begins attending Takaki's middle school. Both have allergies that keep them inside, so they form a strong bond together.

After finishing elementary school, Akari moves to another prefecture with her parents, and the two begin a correspondence as they are still not far apart. Then, Takaki learns he will be moving far away, and writes another letter as he hurries to see Akari one last time. This story compounds multiple heartbreaks, one after another, following these two through the years as they are torn apart by life's events.

6 Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask (Sailor Moon)

The much-loved Sailor Moon is one of the best anime series to show a large cast of strong women kicking butt. The titular character (whose real name is Usagi Tsukino) makes herself known by confronting evil time and again. Occasionally, she finds herself outmatched and is rescued by the mysterious Tuxedo Mask (whose rescue attempts often involve just standing around looking pretty).

The two eventually hooked up and became an item. Then, tragically, they split. In this case, they got back together as they were destined to be together, but the pain of that breakup is something fans will never forget.

5 Kenshin & Tomoe (Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal)

The story of Himura Kenshin's past was explored in the miniseries Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal (also marketed in English-speaking countries as Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal). This was the story of his time as an assassin during the end of the Tokugawa Period. He killed a man who turned out to be Tomoe's fiancé. She worked to gain his trust to kill him and avenge her lover but then fell in love with him instead.

The tragedy is that by the time she has fallen in love, the plan to kill Kenshin has been set in motion. As she fought to save his life, he accidentally killed her.

4 Mugen & Koza (Samurai Champloo)

Like Jin, Mugen is another of the three main characters on Samurai Champloo. He is a rough, rude brute who is driven by base motivations such as spite, boredom, and the pursuits of pleasure. The two-part episode "Misguided Miscreants" explored Mugen's past and reunited him with a girl named Koza who had spent years believing Mugen was dead.

The tragedy in their reunion was that it quickly became clear that while Koza had deep feelings for Mugen, he did not feel the same way. In this way, it was not a proper relationship or breakup, but their reunion had a tender intimacy to it and their split was heart-wrenching.

3 Berserk & Griffith (Berserk)

This is another breakup that wasn't technically a romantic pairing, but just barely missed that mark. In Berserk, Guts' best friend was the leader of their mercenary band, Griffith, a man who it's heavily suggested was deeply in love with Guts. In the manga, Guts picked this up immediately when they met and used some derogatory homophobic language.

When Guts wanted to leave the mercenary group, Griffith refused to let him, drawing his sword. Guts broke Griffith's sword and left. That night, heartbroken, Griffith made the dumbest decision of his life, forcing entry into the bedroom of the kingdom's princess to seduce her. As Griffith kissed the girl, his eyes were haunted with the look of a heartbroken man. He was found out the next morning and thrown into a dungeon.

2 Tai & Sora (Digimon Adventure)

Digimon is a franchise about digital monsters, sort of like how Pokémon is a series about pocket monsters. The protagonist, Tai, is a young boy who is recklessly bold, his impulsivity and sense of adventure fusing in a fun-to-watch match that makes for great narrative drama. Meanwhile, Sora is a girl who is much more thoughtful about others, being nurturing, responsible, and just generally a caring person.

Throughout the series, Tai and Sora demonstrated amazing chemistry together, being a natural fit for one another. Then, for some inexplicable reason, Sora ended up dating another character, Matt.

1 Taki Tachibana & Miki Okudera (Your Name)

The film Your Name is the highest-grossing anime film of all time. The story follows a romance between Mitsuha Miyamizu, a girl who lives in a remote rural village, and Taki Tachibana, a boy in Tokyo, after the two start waking up in the body of the other. They live the other's life for a while and leave each other notes about their days.

While the story is a romance between Taki and Mitsuha, a friend of Taki's begins to develop strong feelings for "him" while Mitsuha is in his body. Taki and Mitsuya both respond to the advances of this the girl, Miki. Ultimately, the relationship is doomed as Taki and Mitsuha feel so strongly for each other.
