Humongous weapons aren't anything new in anime; in fact, they're practically tradition. But even by anime's over-the-top standards, there are some weapons - whether it's an ancestral sword or a signature army vehicle - that are simply too big.

That, and some characters' already weird weapon choices only attract more attention to themselves when they're scaled up by ridiculous proportions. None of this means that the weapons are bad, but they can look a bit silly at first glance.

10 Berserk - Guts' Dragon Slayer Is The Original Giant Anime Sword

Guts Swings The Dragon Slayer On His Shoulder

It's impossible to enumerate every single anime swordsman who wielded a sword that's bigger and taller than they are, and all of them owe their very existence to Guts. While it's debatable if the Black Knight's Dragon Slayer really is the first giant sword in fantasy fiction, it's undoubtedly the most influential that almost everyone took notes from.

In the Berserk universe, the Dragon Slayer was crafted to kill giant beasts, but its massive size and weight (around 220lbs) made it unusable. That was until Guts picked it up and slaughtered Apostles with it. Even better, Guts coated the Dragon Slayer in so much Apostle blood that it allowed Guts' bloodlust to surpass reality and kill supernatural entities.

9 Inuyasha - Sango's Hiraikotsu Is The Biggest Boomerang In Existence

Sango Fends Off The Undead

Since it's a shonen anime, Inuyasha is no stranger to giant weapons (especially swords). Even so, it still boasts one of the most unique giant anime weapons in Sango's boomerang Hiraikotsu, which is just as tall as she is and probably weighs a lot. Hiraikotsu was forged from the bones of slain demons, making it the perfect, unbreakable demon-killing weapon.

Despite its size, Hiraikotsu is still little more than a boomerang. Other than the fact that it always returns to Sango's hands, the most it can do is disperse demonic aura that poisons enemies. This is more than enough for Sango since, at the end of the day, Hiraikotsu is still a giant boomerang that can bludgeon lesser demons to death in one hit.

8 Hellsing Ultimate - Seras Victoria Used An 88MM Flak Cannon To Kill The Major

Seras Pulls Out The 88mm

Thanks to her vampiric strength, Seras could casually use giant guns that she couldn't even budge when she was still human. Seras is known for wielding two variations of her signature weapon - the Hellsing ARMS Anti-Tank Cannon (aka The Harkonnen) - but they pale in comparison to the last gun she fired in the Battle of London.

When The Major goaded Integra Hellsing and Seras to kill him, Seras pulled out his zeppelins' 88mm anti-aircraft cannon and blew up the excited mass murderer in one shot. For reference's sake, the 88mm cannon was a real World War II artillery gun that required a 10-man crew to operate and weighed around 16,000lbs - or a little less than a garbage truck.

7 Puella Magi Madoka Magica - Mami's Tiro Finale Ends With A Massive Derringer

Mami Concludes Tiro Finale

Puella Magi Madoka Magica's Homura Akemi and Mami Tomoe are known for using guns as their magical girl weapons of choice, but Mami beat Homura in terms of size. Where Homura has an endless armory of contemporary firearms and explosives, Mami's arsenal is comprised of flintlock rifles and pistols that keep growing in size.

Mami's ultimate attack - Tiro Finale - is an endless barrage of bullets that she caps off with a giant derringer that's more of a railway cannon than an enlarged version of the pocket pistol. While Mami's closing shot was practically worthless against Charlotte, her derringer is easily one of the biggest weapons ever used by a magical girl.

6 One Piece - Franky's Iron Pirate Franky Shogun Is His Ridiculously Cumbersome Time-Skip Upgrade

The Crowd Cheers The Franky Shogun

During the time-skip, One Piece's Straw Hats spent two years training tirelessly to get stronger. Franky came back not only with a new armored body, but a giant mecha made in his image. The Iron Pirate Franky Shogun (aka the Iron Pirate General Franky) is what happens when Franky combines the Black Rhino FR-U IV motorcycle with the Brachio Tank V.

As cool as it looks, Franky's mech can be hilariously useless. The Iron Pirate is too slow to be effective, and at most, it can take lots of damage before Franky figures out what to name the robot's special attack. It should also be noted that while imposing, the Iron Pirate is actually shorter than Chopper in his Monster Point form.

5 Bleach - Sajin Komamura's Zanpakuto Is A Giant Samurai

Komamura Summons Tenken

To be fair, almost all of the Shinigami's Zanpakuto have a gigantic Bankai form. That said, Capt. Komamura's sword undoubtedly hosts the biggest Zanpakuto spirit in Bleach's Gotei 13. In shikai form, Tenken, lets Komamura summon giant limbs to inflict more damage. In Bankai, Komamura controls a kaiju-sized samurai.

There's nothing subtle about Tenken; it's a giant armored samurai that mimics Komamura's attacks. Despite its size, Tenken is actually one of the weaker Zanpakuto spirits. At worst, Tenken is little more than a giant puppet with a slow reaction time. What it lacks in special abilities, though, Tenken makes up for through its sheer size and raw power.

4 The Seven Deadly Sins - Diane Can Break The Earth Using Gideon

Diane Wields Gideon In Battle

Since she hails from the Giant Clan, Diane is obviously larger than every other member of the Seven Deadly Sins. Appropriately, her Sacred Treasure - the war hammer Gideon - is just as tall as she is. The giant hammer weighs an estimated 2,200lbs and is capable of wiping out entire swaths of land in a single swing.

On its own, Gideon in Diane's hands is a terrifyingly strong weapon. But when combined with her magic Creation, Gideon's might increases more than tenfold. Take the attack Mother Catastrophe, for example, which allows Diane to use Gideon to break the earth and magically turn the debris into deadly projectiles.

3 Neon Genesis Evangelion - The Lance Of Longinus Is One Of Earth's Biggest Mysteries

Unit 02 Gets Stabbed By The Spear

According to the established lore of Neon Genesis Evangelionhumanity was born from the Angel Adam. Humanity only evolved and thrived because Adam was kept dormant by the towering Lance of Longinus that was lodged in its body. What makes the giant lance more ominous than ridiculous is its lack of a proper origin story.

Nobody knows who made it, how it got to Earth, and why it was made. All that's known is that it can break AT Fields. Worse, removing it is what triggered the cataclysmic Second Impact, and its return from the moon after Rei hurled it there was the final seal that needed to be broken to start the Third Impact.

2 Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory - The Dendrobium Gundam Combines A Mobile Suit & The Orchis Armed Base

The Dendrobium In Its Full Form

Since they're basically walking tanks, every Mobile Suit and Gundam seen in the franchise counts as a weapon. In terms of size and ridiculousness, they all pale in comparison to the Dendrobium, which is the fusion of an otherwise standard-issue Gundam (the Gundam Stamen) and a Mobile Armor (the Orchis armament system).

What makes the Dendrobium ludicrous is its appearance; the Orchis attachments are so big it looks like a spaceship with a gunpla figurehead more than a Mobile Suit with extra guns. Its armed capabilities are no laughing matter, though, as its I-Field Generator can be used offensively, and it has enough Chaff Launchers to fend off entire enemy armadas.

1 Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann's Giga Drill Has A Volume That's 3.3 Million Times That Of The Known Universe

The Super Gurren Lagann Towers Over Reality

Giant mecha with giant weapons are so ubiquitous that they've become a cliché, but Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann found a way to pierce this dismissive misconception. In the second recap movie The Lights In The Sky Are Stars, Team Dai-Gurren ends the Anti-Spirals' threat by making a giant Gurren Lagann that's made up of Gurren Laganns.

As per Gurren Lagann tradition, the Super Gurren Lagann's signature weapon is an appropriately astronomical Giga Drill. According to series writer Kazuki Nakashima, the Super Gurren Lagann is bigger than the known universe. With this metric, it's been estimated that if Super Gurren Lagann is around 10.45 trillion light years tall, its drill would be 1.34 duodecillion cubic light years long.
