Perhaps one of the most underrated animated movies of recent years, Megamind has been getting more attention these days with fans reminiscing over the film. And it is worth bringing up as a pretty good movie that was somehow underappreciated at the time of its release. Moreover, it's probably one of the best superhero movies ever made (among both animated and live-action ones).

Sadly, this DreamWorks gem didn't get a sequel (though this might actually be for its own benefit). Luckily for the fans, there are some other similar movies from different studios that resemble Megamind in tone, plot, or characters.

Not a superhero movie per se, Hotel Transylvania comes quite close to it with its cast of supernatural characters (or monsters) from classic horror stories with them having special powers that they use for their own good rather than for the good of the people as superheroes would.

With its unique animation style, Hotel Transylvania became a box office hit and even got nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature. The movie also spawned two sequels with the third one scheduled for this year.

Likewise, Rise of the Guardians isn't a superhero movie either, but it also features a group of characters with superpowers. Moreover, these characters actually work for the good of the people even though humans don't know they really exist.

Despite performing well at the box office, it allegedly lost money due to marketing expenses. On the other hand, Rise of the Guardians was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature and the Annie Award in the same category.

Another movie that isn't a superhero one per se, Kung Fu Panda features a group of characters training to become masters of kung fu which will allow them to defend the peaceful people from an evil warrior. In other words, it clearly has some very similar stakes.

A massive critical and commercial success, it spawned two more successful movies and eventually developed into a multimedia franchise.

6 Despicable Me Has The Villain As The Lead Of The Story (2010)

Much like Megamind, Gru from Despicable Me is the villain of the story who gradually becomes the hero and learns to let other people into his life. He wants to be evil because people expect him to be, but he realizes that that's not actually who he really is.

Opening to great reviews from critics, Despicable Me became one of the highest-grossing movies of 2010 and one of the highest-grossing animated movies of all time. In addition to that, it spawned two sequels and two spin-offs.

Another superhero movie about Batman, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is the only completely traditionally-animated movie on this list (as well as the oldest one.) And yet, it is still worth a watch if you are particularly after the superhero element of Megamind more than after anything else.

Despite being a box office failure, it was praised by critics, especially for its stylized animation and voice acting. However, it was successful on home media and gained a fan following still active today.

2 The Incredibles Also Features A Villain Created By The Actions Of The Other Characters In The Film (2004)

Another straightforward superhero movie, The Incredibles is quite different from Megamind but features an equally powerful villain created by the main characters themselves.

Considering that it got a sequel recently, The Incredibles was definitely a box office success and was praised by critics. At the same time, it won two Academy Awards as well as the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature.
