Animal Crossing: New Horizons lets players customize nearly every aspect of their experience, from their island's topography to their villager's outfits. With multiple free updates across the game's lifespan, even more custom options have been unlocked. However, while there are plenty of ways to personalize the experience, one aspect of villager customization has remained unchanged since the beginning: Hairstyles.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons player Taniesha Bracken-Hucks, a Black woman, created a Change.org petition to demand more diverse hairstyle choices from Nintendo. At time of writing, the petition has garnered over 35 thousand signatures since July.

In the petition description, which is accompanied by a doodle of her Animal Crossing character with curly hair, Bracken wrote, "Every person should feel represented when playing a game they love and making their avatar. Ethnic hair styles are often forgotten. In light of what is happening in America concerning Black rights, it would be amazing to have gamers of all races represented on all gaming platforms. Let's start with Animal Crossing! Let's create an environment of inclusivity and acceptance in this already amazing game."

At the start of New Horizons, players are given eight different hairstyles to choose from, alongside various colors. None of these hairstyles are restricted by gender, so players can pick whatever they fancy. Players can unlock more by crafting a mirror and redeeming their Nook Miles at the Nook Stop in Resident Services for both pop and cool hairstyles. They can also unlock a bonus "bedhead" hairstyle if they boot up the game after a month of inactivity. Outside of these options, there are no other ways to customize a villager's hairstyle.

Furthermore, although there are some textured hairstyles available in New Horizons, the majority are smooth or straight. Bracken and her petition's supporters hope to see those options greatly expanded.

Expanded hairstyle options have been requested by New Horizons players for quite some time now. With the Animal Crossing series having such a diverse fanbase, it's no surprise so many people would show their support for this petition. Since customization is such a big part of why people play Animal Crossing, it would be smart for Nintendo to add these new features. Even giving players the option to alter the already existing hairstyles would go a long way in giving players even more creative freedom.
