Animal Crossing: New Horizons got a massive update on April 23, including new seasonal events, new vendors and more features. Among the NPCs returning from past Animal Crossing games is Redd, the shady character who sells fine art from his boat, the Treasure Trawler. Though Isabelle warns players about his presence in her morning announcements, talking to Redd is how players can help Blathers expand his museum -- and introduce an art collection to their island.

When players talk to Blathers after downloading the update from Nintendo, he informs them that, thanks to their hard work growing the current collections -- fish, bugs and fossils -- he has the opportunity to add new collections. He asks players to donate any piece of art they may find in their travels, then returns to his standard dialogue options.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Treasure Trawler

Although Redd's Treasure Trawler can be found docked at each player's "secret beach" on the northernmost end of their island, trying to enter the boat won't do players any good. They'll resist going inside because the boat looks "shady" and note that they should ask permission before boarding. That's because Redd isn't there -- he's wandering the island, like Isabelle said in her announcements.

Much like Saharah and Flick, the traveling NPCs who can wander anywhere on the island during their visits, Redd may be anywhere -- so players potentially have to search each beach and bluff to track him down. Once they do, he'll give them a sales pitch and attempt to sell a painting for nearly 500,000 Bells. Both response options are negative, so he takes the price down to the "family discount" of 10 percent, totaling at less than 5,000 Bells.

Here, players have a choice: They can purchase a painting from Redd, sight unseen, or they can say no and walk away. Although it may be tempting to say no, since Redd is known for selling counterfeit works of art, players have to purchase the painting in order to expand the museum. There's no way to tell its legitimacy until offering it to Blathers, but rest assured: This first purchase from Redd is completely genuine.

Once players purchase the painting from Redd and take it to Blathers, he excitedly informs them he can now apply for museum expansion and introduce an art collection to the island. To purchase art from the Treasure Trawler, players will have to wait -- but construction usually takes just a couple days to complete and Blathers doesn't mention anything about the museum being closed during that time, which means it should be possible to purchase art and fill the new gallery sooner rather than later.
