Nintendo has announced a Nov. 19 update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons with tons of new content, including holiday events, new items and more features. One of the best new additions is six new hairstyles that can be purchased via the Nook Stop in Resident Services for 2,700 Nook Miles.

For many players, additional hairstyle options have been a long time coming. New Horizons lets players customize nearly every aspect of their game, so many have fought for better inclusion for players of color through petitions and other appeals. For the Halloween event, Nintendo added new skin tone options, indicating it was possible for the company to increase the number of character options. Still, players wondered if more inclusive customization would ever make its way to the game.

Nintendo adds new hair customization options to Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Nov. 19

The news about additional hairstyles in the Nov. 19 update is refreshing and exciting. The six hairstyles include braids, curls, buns, afros and a bald option. This is a step in the right direction for the franchise, which has historically failed to represent its entire fanbase in-game.

The Animal Crossing franchise prides itself on being an enjoyable experience for all players, so it needs to allow all of its players to feel seen and represented. Offering as many options as possible for character customization is a great way to do this.

Although it's been just eight months since the game launched, Animal Crossing: New Horizons players have racked up hundreds or even thousands of hours of playtime. New hairstyles will give them even more freedom and the ability to express their style more accurately.

However, these new additions shouldn't be the end of better inclusion in New Horizons. What Nintendo should do next is add more options beyond hair, such as more skin tone and eye color or style options. Nintedo can also add even more hairstyles, since there are still plenty of real-life styles, textures and colors that could be added to the game. The update announcement did tease yet another free update coming in late January, so maybe Nintendo will gift players with an even more expansive suite of hair options to choose from.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now for Nintendo Switch. The winter update will be available for download at 10 a.m. Japan time on Friday, Nov. 19.
