While the Animal Crossing franchise spans more than five games, there are familiar faces players can find in each title. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is no exception, with Tom Nook, the Able sisters and Blathers returning once again to live on the island.

Blathers, the seres' museum curator, may end up becoming the character that most players interact with the most. Blathers is in charge of identifying and researching all manner of insects, fish and fossils that players can discover in the game. However, Blathers has a very important side quest that many newcomers may miss at first: building his museum.

Although in previous titles Blathers was available at the start of the game and players could immediately donate any fish, fossils or insects they had found, that's not the case in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Players will have two options to handle all the critters and fossils they find before Blathers returns to the island. The first option is to store them all in the player's home, crowding up the tiny living space. The second is to sell all the items for bells. While not a bad option if the player sorely needs bells, it is still not the best choice. Each fish, insect and fossil could be a unique item that can be donated and displayed in the museum. If the item is sold before Blathers can inspect it, players may not see that creature or fossil again for quite some time.

So how does Blathers arrive on the island? It turns out that Blathers and Tom Nook are friends, and have a history together. By doing a few favors for Tom Nook, he will invite Blathers to live on the island. There is no special event or time that this can occur, as Tom Nook will ask for the favors on the first day players arrive on their island. To call Blathers specifically, Tom Nook requests players gather five unique fish or insects, so no, catching five sea bass is not going to cut it. This step can be done quite easily, as multiple common fish species can be found right away. Insects are also easy, as butterflies are plentiful on the island. If players are feeling brave, catching the roaming tarantulas or shaking trees to catch wasps is another easy way to capture two unique insects.

If players are unlucky and cannot seem to find five unique creatures on their island, visiting mystery islands can be helpful, especially because players can multitask and gather materials, as well as fish or insects. Mystery islands are randomly generated, and so while players may be taken to an island with special animals, and unique items like coconut trees or bamboo, there is one terrifying island that unlucky players may end up on, so be prepared for anything.

Once the five insects or fish are given to Tom Nook, he will give Blathers a call, and the next day Blathers will arrive on the island. Players can place Blathers' tent on the island in a location of their choice, and this will eventually become the location of the museum. Blathers will also give the player the vaulting pole and shovel to help explore the island. For Blathers to officially open the museum, players need to donate fifteen unique creatures or fossils. Blathers will still happily accept donations of creatures you've already caught, though.

Once fifteen unique creatures have been donated, Blathers will close up his tent for two days while the museum is built and curated. Impatient players may decide to rush ahead, but regardless, once two days have passed, players can explore the museum and visit their donations at any time they please. While there may not be any special reward for completing the museum's collection, Blathers will surely offer up words of congratulations to the player. Besides, knowing that all the island residents can see the player's name beside every donated item is its own reward.
