The first time you see a tarantula in Animal Crossing: New Horizons might be exciting. After all, it's a chance to fill up the Critterpedia with a rare bug worth a whopping 8,000 Bells. However, if your first swing at the furry little creature was a miss, you'll soon find your character waking up at home after being knocked out, losing your chance at catching the elusive creature.

Tarantulas are a terrifying addition to an otherwise cute game, yet they're one of the best chances at making bank. While they spawn irregularly after 7PM, you probably won't find enough in one night to pay off your home loan or buy that 68,000 bell arcade fighting game. But there are two options if you want to fill your pockets and your purse with these creepy-crawlies. One of these involves luck (or lack thereof), but the other you can attempt for yourself. Like the first method, this will involve purchasing a Nook Miles Ticket and going on a Mystery Tour.

Two conditions must be met before creating your own Tarantula Island. First, it must be between 7 PM and 4 AM before you take off, and second, the island you attempt this on must be flat, already have bugs on it and not contain cliffs. And, unfortunately, this method will not work in the Southern Hemisphere.

Half of the battle is preparation, so you'll need to bring some tools along. You'll be discarding them later, but you don't want to have to spend Nook Miles on getting tools from Wilbur the dodo. Before rushing to the airport, pack two Flimsy Nets, a Stone or Flimsy Axe, ten branches, a Flimsy Shovel and a vaulting pole. You'll also want to have as many inventory slots as possible, but this will only affect how much you can profit, not how this method will work.

Once you've touched down on your (hopefully) flat Mystery Island, take note of trees, rocks and weeds. You'll have to destroy them in a little while, but first, harvest enough wood to make a second tool just in case something breaks. Next, shake the trees for furniture, fruits and bells and whack the rocks for iron nuggets and stones. After you get all these resources, use the iron nuggets to make a Net and Axe that will last longer. Make sure to pull up all the weeds and flower heads, but not the roots. Next, eat some of the fruit you've picked so you can smash all the rocks on the island.

Setting this all up will take a while, but this will prevent other bugs from spawning on flowers, stumps, rocks or trees to make room for tarantulas. When you're done clearing the island, dump all your resources and tools (except for your Net and Vaulting Pole) on the beach to clear you inventory without restricting your view. The last thing you'll need to do before you're ready is chase off any other bugs, like wharf roaches and tiger beetles. Once the island is fully cleared, tarantulas will begin to spawn offscreen.

Then, it's time to start catching tarantulas. Keep in mind that, before a tarantula sees you, it'll skitter around in circles before rearing back and faintly hissing. Don't move during this time. Once it puts it legs down, move forward slowly until it raises its legs again. Repeat this until you're close enough to catch the creature.

Daring and experienced players, can taunt the tarantula into chasing them and then swing around at the right time to bag the spider. Other players might choose to set up tarantula traps by digging holes in a diamond shape. After aggravating a tarantula, run to the ring of holes and jump over them. The tarantula will scurry outside the holes in incensed circles, providing the perfect target for your net.

If you do get bitten, don't worry about loosing all of your hard work, as you'll wake up at the dock on the same island with Wilbur fretting over you.

Be patient and try not to run too much while trying to catch tarantulas, as this can trigger a tarantula to begin attacking which will cost you time. Catching enough tarantulas for fill your pockets will take time, but it'll be worth it. Your Net will likely break, but this is why you should bring along two Flimsy Nets, as you can craft yourself another Net with iron nuggets.

Once you've filled your pockets, drop your Vaulting Pole and catch one last tarantula. Now, you'll have a full inventory of 39 tarantulas crawling around your pants, and it's time to go home. If possible, try to get back before 10PM, as that is the time Nook's Cranny will close, and items sold using the bin will only yield 80 percent of the items' total value. Selling 39 tarantulas to the Nooklings will earn you a staggering 312,000 Bells, which is likely enough to pay off (or at least put a sizable dent in) your mortgage or help you pay for that new bridge or ramp your town needs.

Creating Tarantula Islands and harvesting the creepy-crawlies requires patience and time, but the effort is well worth it. Though hairy spiders are terrifying, players are paid a handsome price for the dangerous job of catching them. You may need to take a break after this stressful trip, but at least you'll have enough Bells to buy something comfy to lounge in.
