Angela Lansbury has joined the cast of "Mary Poppins Returns," the sequel to Disney's 1964 classic.
Deadline reports the three-time Oscar nominee will play the Balloon Lady, a character from P.L. Travers' children's books. A five-time Tony winner, Lansbury is a Disney veteran having starred in such classics as "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" and "Beauty and the Beast,"
Directed and produced by Rob Marshall ("Chicago"), "Mary Poppins Returns" stars Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep and Dick Van Dyke, who starred in the original.
Set in Depression-era London, the film follows the adult lives of Michael (Whishaw) and Jane Banks (Mortimer), the children from "Mary Poppins." According to Deadline, "After Michael suffers a personal loss, the nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Miranda), uses her magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives." Streep will play Mary's eccentric cousin Topsy.
Now filming at Shepperton Studios in England, "Mary Poppins Returns" will open Christmas 2018.
