Angela Bassett has earned her second career Academy Award nomination for her performance in the 2022 Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced on Jan. 24 by actors Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams, with Bassett receiving a Best Actress in a Supporting Role nomination for her reprisal of Ramonda, the Sovereign Queen Mother of Wakanda, in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She will be competing against Hong Chou (The Whale), Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) in the category. Bassett previously received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her performance in 1993's What's Love Got to Do with It.

The nomination makes Bassett the first actor to receive a nod for a Marvel Studios film. The Wakanda Forever actor achieved a similar feat earlier this year at the Golden Globes when she took home the award for Best Supporting Actress Performance in a Motion Picture for her role as Ramonda. In addition to Best Supporting Actress, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever received Oscar nominations for Best Original Song ("Lift Me Up - Music by Tems, Rihanna, Ryan Coogler, and Ludwig Göransson; Lyrics by Tems and Ryan Coogler), Best Makeup and Hairstyling (Camille Friend and Joel Harlow), Best Costume Design (Ruth Carter) and Best Visual Effects (Geoffrey Baumann, Craig Hammack, R. Christopher White and Dan Sudick).

Black Panther 3 Is in Development

With Wakanda Forever having so far earned over $835 million at the worldwide box office, Marvel Studios is wasting no time getting a third Black Panther film into development. Letitia Wright, who stars as Shuri/Black Panther in the MCU, recently stated that she believes Black Panther 3 is "already in the works." She added, "You know, we just had a terrific two years of just bringing it out and everybody coming together to support it. We need a little bit of a break, we need to regroup, and [director] Ryan [Coogler] needs to get back into the lab, so it's going to take a while, but really excited for you guys to see that." It's worth noting that Marvel Studios has not yet announced Black Panther 3, meaning Wright's comments should be taken with a grain of salt for now.

Set after the events of 2019's Avengers: Endgame, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever centers on the leaders of Wakanda fighting to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. In addition to Bassett, the MCU sequel stars Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Florence Kasumba, Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Martin Freeman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Wakanda Forever is still playing in theaters.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will debut on Disney+ on Feb. 1, ahead of its home video release on Feb. 7.
