Instead of focusing on the impressive visuals that director Ang Lee has created for the movie, this trailer offers up some context. We see that the story will be told through flashbacks with Pi explaining the story of his life to another man, from his childhood in India to the shipwreck that leaves him marooned at sea during his family's move to Canada. "The next part of the story you will find hard to believe," Pi says in the trailer.
It's at that point that the visuals switch back to the ones we responded so well to in the domestic trailer. Pi finds himself stranded on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, and the two must learn to live alongside one another to survive. Though the trailer is in 2D, it's easy to see how the 3D effects will be incorporated. Our one complaint is that it's pretty clear that the animals in the trailer are all CGI, but maybe that will be fixed as we get closer to Life of Pi's release date or it's not as evident when the movie is screened in 3D.
Suraj Sharma, Gérard Depardieu, Irrfan Khan and Tabu star in the film, which tells the spiritual story of an Indian boy nicknamed Pi who survives a disaster at sea only to be marooned on a lifeboat for 227 days with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Life of Pi is due in theaters on Nov. 21.
Director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) creates a groundbreaking movie event about a young man who survives a tragic disaster at sea and is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While marooned on a lifeboat, he forms an amazing and unexpected connection with the ship’s only other survivor -- a fearsome Bengal tiger.
