Ang Lee Wants to Helm Cleopatra

Many directors have come and gone since it was announced that Stacy Schiff’s novel Cleopatra: A Life was to be adapted for the big screen. Although Angelina Jolie has remained attached to star since she first stated her interest, James Cameron, Paul Greengrass and, most recently, David Fincher have all decided to pass on the project.

That’s OK, though, because there’s a new director interested in tackling the movie. Oscar nominee Ang Lee confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he’d like to take a stab at the historical epic.

“I’m about to read the script,” he said. “It just feels right to me after all the other types of films I’ve done. What does it have in common with any of them? They’re all totally different! That’s what makes this perfect.”

This interview was done before Lee’s most recent film Life of Pi landed 11 Academy Award nominations, and that news could change how he views Cleopatra. Lee won the best director Oscar in 2005 for Brokeback Mountain, and he went small with his next movies, Lust, Caution and Taking Woodstock. It will be interesting to see if he decides to go for a big film like Cleopatra next, or go for a smaller project again.
