Andy Serkis Talks 'Extraordinary Challenge' of Directing The Hobbit

Andy Serkis got a big promotion in The Hobbit films, serving as second unit director. In addition to reprising his role as Gollum, Serkis got behind the camera to help out director Peter Jackson with filming the three movies.

Digital Spy recently caught up with Serkis to talk to him about his first time directing. We hope he continues to do so in the future, and based on his comments it seems like he will.

"It's an area that I've been gradually moving towards over the last two years," he said. "[Jackson's] known for a long time I wanted to direct, and I was thrilled to be asked."

He continued, "It was an extraordinary challenge, 200 days of shooting, masses and masses of really exciting things going on. It was wonderful."

Hopefully the special features that are inevitably released about The Hobbit will detail which parts of An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again Serkis specifically worked on. Once Serkis has proved himself, maybe Warner Bros. will give him a movie of his own... if he can step away from the motion capture business.

Jackson’s three-movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved fantasy novel stars Martin Freeman and Ian McKellen, and features returning Lord of the Rings stars Cate Blancett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom and Andy Serkis. The ensemble cast also includes Richard Armitage, John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Evangeline Lilly, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas and Aidan Turner.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens Dec. 14, followed by The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on Dec. 13, 2013, and The Hobbit: There and Back Again on July 18, 2014.
