Andy Serkis got candid about Snoke's shocking Star Wars fate in The Last Jedi.

During an interview with GQ, Serkis spoke on his role as Kino Loy in Tony Gilroy’s Rogue One Disney+ spinoff, Andor. The actor praised the series' tone, but eventually, the conversation shifted to his previous work in the Star Wars universe as Snoke in the sequel trilogy. While the character seemed to be set up as the main villain pulling the strings in 2015's The Force Awakens, he was killed off fairly early on in The Last Jedi, and Serkis seemed surprised by the outcome. The actor said, "Let me just phrase it like this. When I went in to read The Last Jedi, [I spent] the first 30 pages thinking, 'This is the most incredible character.' Then I turned the page: 'And then Snoke gets sliced in half.' And I was gutted. Gutted."

Serkis was heavily involved in the development process of creating Snoke, and he believed that he would be a central figure in the sequel trilogy moving forward. It was ultimately narrative disagreements between J.J. Abrams, who directed The Force Awakens, and Rian Johnson, who helmed The Last Jedi, that decided Snoke's fate. As the man in charge of the second film, Johnson's vision came out ahead and the character made an early exit from the franchise. Much like the fans, Serkis was looking forward to learning more about Snoke in future films, and he would love an opportunity to come back. The Gollum actor said, "I actually really love that character. And I'm putting it out there: I wouldn't mind if he came back."

Who Is Snoke in Star Wars?

Snoke was introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a Force-sensitive humanoid genetic strandcast male that was the Supreme Leader of the First Order during the New Republic Era. Snoke gained the heir of the Skywalker bloodline as a student when Padawan Ben Solo (Adam Driver) was turned to the dark side. Solo adopted the persona of Kylo Ren and completely renounced the Jedi Order under Snoke.

Snoke would use his apprentice to hunt down and destroy Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) so he could purge the last Jedi but while pursuing his objectives to eliminate the Resistance and Skywalker, Snoke was killed by Kylo Ren as he sought to rule the galaxy as the new Supreme Leader. Since the former Supreme Leader was murdered at the hands of his apprentice, Snoke's existence was fulfilled because he was designed to mold and groom his student into someone worthy of being an heir of the Sith.
