Spider-Man: No Way Home star Andrew Garfield revealed how his input altered the film's three-Spider-Men-pointing scene.

Speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast on The Direct, Garfield explained how the idea took a while to figure out. "Oh, so we were trying to figure out the pointing thing, like how we were going to do the pointing meme in a way -- it took us a while -- it kind of happened naturally on that scaffolding scene with Peter 1, Peter 2, Peter 3, like all that," Garfield said.

The actor also noted how he wasn't a fan of the initial scripting of the pointing scene as it felt too simple. "I remember having a lightning bolt and running into set and telling [director] Jon [Watts], 'I got it, I got it,'" Garfield added. "Cause there's this moment where Jacob is like, 'Hey Peter?' and we all go, 'Yeah?' But in the script, it was like, that was that. We all go 'Yeah?' and in the script, my Peter says, 'This isn't going to get old at all,' like something kind of sardonic - which felt kinda undercutting."

Garfield said to No Way Home director Watts that he thought the moment needed a more endearing element. "It's actually kinda cute. So then we were thinking I could say, 'Aw, this is adorable. We're so adorable. God, we're cute.' Something like that. But then I was like, no, this is the moment where we get to go, 'Do you mean me?' Jon was like, 'That's it. That's it. Done.' I was so happy that worked."

The Spider-Man pointing meme Garfield is referencing comes from the Spider-Man animated series, where the web-slinger bumps into a criminal attempting to impersonate him. The meme gained a new burst of popularity during the lead-up to the release of No Way Home, as rumors of Tobey Maguire's and Garfield's appearances began to dominate the news surrounding the film.

Garfield's role in No Way Home was praised by fans and critics, with many calling for another installment in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. In No Way Home, Garfield's Spider-Man describes how he stopped pulling his punches after suffering from the death of Gwen Stacy, and some fans think that Sony should explore this darker storyline in a potential The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is in theaters now.
