The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield explained the danger that comes with playing the Wall-Crawler.
In an interview with GQ, Garfield opened up about his experience being cast as the iconic Marvel character in Sony's Spider-Man reboot at the age of 26. "I’m like, 'Fuck, that was a lot to take on. It’s a shit-tonne to take on.' And I wanted to take it on," he said. "I was ready. I was so up for it. It didn’t feel heavy. But I think there were elements that felt very... I sensed danger for myself, in terms of fame and exposure."
He continued, "Even as I took [The Amazing Spider-Man] on, I was like, 'I wanna make sure I get to do Angels in America and Death of a Salesman in a few years’ time.' I wanna be a theatre actor first because that feels evergreen. If I can do theatre for the rest of my life to an audience of 50 people a night, I know that my life is going to be satisfying. That’s not me being glib -- I really know that."
Garfield headlined Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012 and its sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014. The sequel received largely negative reviews from critics and audiences, though a third film was greenlit by Sony and planned for release in 2016. Those plans were later scrapped when Marvel and Sony reached their agreement for Spider-Man to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a role that was inevitably played by Tom Holland.
Garfield's Return to Spider-Man
While a third Amazing Spider-Man film was never realized, Garfield reprised his role as the Web-Slinger for 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw three generations of Spider-Mans unite on the big screen. This included Holland, Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Since the release of No Way Home, many fans have hoped for Garfield's return to the role in a potential Amazing Spider-Man 3. In February, Garfield denied any rumors that there were plans for him to return in a future Spider-Man film. "No plans, that's the truth," he said. "Everyone's gonna call me a liar for the rest of my life. I'm the boy who cried wolf."
Garfield recently starred in the FX series Under the Banner of Heaven and stated in April that he would be taking a hiatus from acting once the project was released. "I need to recalibrate and reconsider what I want to do next and who I want to be and just be a bit of a person for a while. Because as you know, that is a washing machine, that awards season. I need to just be a bit ordinary for a while."
