Lucasfilm's Disney+ original series Andor has proven to be a game-changer for the Star Wars franchise, offering a more adult-oriented, morally ambiguous take on the galaxy far, far away. Series creator Tony Gilroy hopes that such innovations will not stop with him.

"Oh, we're breaking ground for a lot of people who either couldn't get a break trying to change it up, or be brave enough, or even what the possibilities were," Gilroy said during a recent interview with Collider. "As we said before, it's like taking the Latin Mass out of the Roman Catholic Church in a way. Once you do that, it's like, 'Wow, everything changes.' Well, what will other people do with it? That would be the coolest thing. The coolest thing would be for other people to come along and start taking the next level, or the next road. There's all kinds of things you can do with this."

Notably, a number of filmmakers have boarded the Star Wars franchise over the years, only to depart due to creative differences with Lucasfilm. In some cases, like with Solo: A Star Wars Story, the project lives on under new leadership. In other cases, though, the project is shelved indefinitely, which currently seems to be the case with Rogue Squadron.

That said, Andor is not the first filmmaker-driven Star Wars project to see the light of day that has pushed creative boundaries for the franchise, with arguably the biggest recent example being 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. To Gilroy's point, however, Andor may very well help usher in an era of even more fresh, unique tales set within the Star Wars universe.

Andor Is Currently Streaming on Disney+

Andor serves as a prequel to the 2016 anthology film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which Gilroy co-wrote. The Disney+ series stars Diego Luna, who reprises his role as Cassian Andor. Andor Season 1 takes place five years before the events of Rogue One. Season 2 will cover the subsequent four years, leading directly into the events of the 2016 film. Each season consists of 12 episodes, for a grand total of 24.

Andor Season 1 premiered its first three episodes on Disney+ on Sept. 21. The season finale is currently scheduled to debut on Wednesday, Nov. 23. Season 2 is scheduled to enter production that very same week -- more specifically, on Monday, Nov. 21. However, it remains to be seen exactly when Andor Season 2 will actually hit screens.
