Anchor Bay Enlists First Squad Anime

Anchor Bay Entertainment has snatched up the U.S. home-distribution rights to First Squad: The Moment of Truth, the acclaimed anime set in the opening days of World War II.

Produced by the Russian-Canadian company Molot Entertainment and Japanese animation powerhouse Studio 4°C, First Squad has been screened at the Cannes Film Festival, the Locarno Film Festival and Fantasporto.

Written by Misha Shprits and Aljosha Klimov and directed by Yoshiharu Ashino, the film centers on a group of Soviet teenagers with extraordinary abilities who have been drafted to form a special unit to fight the invading German army on the Eastern Front. Their nemesis is an SS officer who attempts to resurrect an army of Crusaders from the 12th-century Order of the Sacred Cross and enlist them for the Nazi cause.

Anchor Bay plans to release First Squad on Blu-ray and DVD later this summer. You can watch a trailer (in Russian) below.
