There have been enough rumors about director Matt Reeves' The Batman to fill an entire book. Naturally, most of the chatter surrounded the casting of the lead role, which ultimately went to Robert Pattinson, but there's also been a fair amount of gossip dedicated to the supporting cast. One of the more eyebrow-raising pieces of speculation was the suggestion that Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey was set to portray Harvey Dent/Two-Face.

The rumor originated on the website We Got This Covered, which reported that McConaughey would briefly appear as Dent in The Batman, with his Two-Face transformation saved for the sequel. A few days later, the United Kingdom's Daily Mail reported the actor had been cast as Dent as well.

Whether it's actually true doesn't matter at this point, as the internet gobbled up the reports. Around the same time, there were also whispers that Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell were eyed for the parts of Alfred Pennyworth and Oswald Cobblepot (aka The Penguin), respectively. Unlike the McConaughey buzz, however, it didn't take long for those casting reports to be officially confirmed.

Seeing the type of talent associated with The Batman, it isn't outside of the realm of possibility that McConaughey would join the production. More importantly, it's plausible to imagine him as the Gotham City district attorney who breaks bad and becomes obsessed with duality. Considering McConaughey's acting range and propensity for challenging himself, a complex role like Two-Face could be the perfect vehicle.

As expected, Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. have courted McConaughey for years, trying to convince him to join their respective universes. "I've read some Marvel and DC scripts and I've talked about working with them," he told Variety in 2015. "Nothing has been right for me yet. But I'm sure open to it." In the same interview, McConaughey mentioned that the story and character would have to be right, but he was hesitant of signing up for multiple movies. If he were set to play Dent, as per the rumor, he'd likely have a small cameo in The Batman, then a bigger part in the sequel and he'd be done.

However, McConaughey hasn't been announced as part of The Batman's cast. While Reeves has used his social media to reveal the main cast members, there's been no mention of McConaughey. That said, it's entirely possible his cameo could be kept a secret. With all of the leaks and buzz around the project, it would be a nice surprise for fans to discover he'd been cast as Dent while watching it onscreen.

Of course, no one ever promised Dent would be in The Batman in the first place. And therein lies the pesky thing about rumors, because people tend to mistake them for facts when they should be instead taken with a grain of salt.

Directed and co-written by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Jayme Lawson and Peter Sarsgaard. The film arrives in theaters on Oct. 1, 2021.
