After winning the WWE Championship from Brock Lesnar at WrestleManiaDrew McIntyre officially began his current reign at the top of the card defending his title against the likes of The Big Show and Bobby Lashley. Ongoing since his triumphant victory, McIntyre has also been in a slow-burning feud with WBC Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury.

Beginning with McIntyre calling out Fury during an interview with talkSPORT, Fury responded within days to this by accepting the challenge on social media, saying, "I accept his challenge, anytime, anyplace, anywhere." It seemed there may have been initial plans for them to have a match closer to WrestleMania, but most likely had to put those plans on hold due to the global pandemic. While certainly an interesting fusion of two sports, this would not be the first time a boxer and a wrestler have stepped in the ring together.

Former undisputed heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson has also been involved in angles and feuds both in the WWE, during the Attitude Era, and more recently, with AEW being the one to crown their very first TNT Champion at Double or Nothing. This would not even be the first time that Tyson Fury has been in the ring with a wrestler. He had a match with Braun Strowman in Saudi Arabia at Crown Jewel. He ended up victorious in that match after nailing Strowman with a right hook outside of the ring, winning via count-out.

During an interview with Gorilla Position Podcast, the WWE champ showed his continued interest in having the match along with more specifics about when and more importantly, where he would want this to happen. McIntyre hopes that this feud could headline a Pay-Per-View in the United Kingdom for the title. While this obviously cannot happen anytime soon, the prospect of such a match remains interesting.

Drew McIntyre is the first British WWE Champion in company history, so the obvious appeal of having him in front of a home crowd would be tantalizing. But what adds to this even further would be that Tyson Fury is also a British world champion in boxing, which, while not quite as rare as being the first and only, does not happen often. The prospects of having two British champions in front of a raucous British crowd is almost too good to pass up. This, of course, does not necessarily mean the feud would end up being a purely positive note for either man.

While the intrigue is there and a crossover storyline with one of boxing's biggest stars will undoubtedly lead to a few more eyes on the WWE product, the issue comes from how the match ends. Tyson Fury cannot win the WWE Championship, and Drew McIntyre cannot afford to look weak in the face of Fury. Matches like this often serve the purpose of giving the majority of the spotlight to the outsider and usually end with them looking strong. This is especially true when that outsider happens to be a professional fighter. So, how exactly can this happen when the WWE Championship is on the line? Someone has to lose and (ideally) lose clean. Fury losing seems the obvious choice, considering he appears to have no plans on becoming a full-time member of the WWE roster, as well as having an upcoming title defense in the boxing world. But how can Fury lose to McIntyre without delegitimizing him as both a WWE championship contender and pro boxer?

The answer is, unfortunately, not very clear. Each man deserves to be highlighted, and each deserves to have their hand held high in front of a home audience. Either way, the promise of having two true British heavyweight champions square off against each other is too juicy to pass up. The image of Fury holding up the WBC title while McIntyre holds up the WWE title might be worth the booking strife alone.
