Amy Sedaris has joined the cast of the upcoming Lion King reboot, playing a character that did not appear in the 1994 Disney animated classic.
Directed by Jon Favreau, the film is the latest Disney animated classic to be remade in recent years, following the massive critical and financial success of films like Beauty & the Beast and The Jungle Book (which was also directed by Favreau). The film is a re-imagining of the 1994 Academy Award-winning original, and it seems the creators are willing to take some liberties with the cast.
Sedaris will play an entirely new character, according to a report by Variety. She’ll play an elephant shrew, the name of which has not yet been revealed. She’ll join a positively stacked cast for the CGI-animated film, which also stars James Earl Jones, Donald Glober, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Beyonce, John Kani, Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen, Alfre Woodard, Keegan-Michael Key, John Oliver, Florence Kasumba and Eric Andre.
The recently released teaser trailer for the film managed to earn a whopping 224.6 million views in the first 24 hours of its premiere, making it the second-most watched trailer released, ever. Only the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War was more immediately successful, which gained 238 million views in the same time frame.
The Lion King is scheduled to be released July 19, 2019.
