DC Comics announced the middle-grade novel Amethyst: Princess of Gemworldputting the magical character in a mundane setting so she may learn to value her powers and appreciate the responsibility that comes with them.

In the story, Princess Amaya is grounded by her parents after a magical prank goes awry. They force her to spend some time on Earth to gain some perspective, but a one-week punishment turns into a three-year stay. Acclimated to her new home, she must readjust when a Prince of the Realm spirits her back to Gemworld.

Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld is written by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale, and illustrated and colored by Asiah Fulmore. Authors Shannon and Dean Hale's other works include Diana, Princess of the Amazons for DC, The Princess in Black series, two Squirrel Girl novels for Marvel, and Rapunzel's Revenge, which was nominated for an Eisner award. As a solo author, Shannon Hale has written Best Friends, a graphic novel memoir, the Ever After High series, and Princess Academy, which won a Newbery Honor.

Amethyst is a DC Comics superhero created by Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn and Ernie Colón in 1983. The original series tells the story of Amy Winston, who discovers that she is actually the princess of a magical dimension known as Gemworld. Her storyline underwent various alterations as DC continuity changed with Infinite Crisis and The New 52. The character was brought back in 2020 under the Wonder Comics banner in Amethyst, a six-issue miniseries spinoff of Young Justice by writer-artist Amy Reeder.
