A new American Pie film is in the works -- and it promises to be a "fresh take" on Universal's long-running sex comedy franchise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor and filmmaker Sujata Day (Insecure, Definition Please) is attached to write a new entry in the American Pie franchise for Universal 1440 Entertainment, division of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. The new film's story is based on Day's own original pitch, and is described as being a "fresh take" on American Pie. That said, plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being.

As an actor, Day is perhaps best known for her role as Sarah on the HBO series Insecure, having previously appeared on Issa Rae's webseries The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. As a filmmaker, Day made her feature directorial debut with 2020's Definition Please, which she also wrote and starred in. In the film, Day portrays Monica Chowdry, a former spelling bee champion who is forced to reconcile with her estranged brother as the two care for their ailing mother.

Not to be confused with the 1971 Don McLean song of the same name, Universal's American Pie was written by Adam Herz and directed by Paul Weitz in the latter's own directorial debut. The film originally released in theaters in 1999, starring the likes of Jason Biggs (Orange Is the New Black), Chris Klein (The Flash), Seann William Scott (Final Destination), Alyson Hannigan (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, How I Met Your Mother), Eugene Levy (Schitt's Creek) and John Cho (Star Trek, Harold & Kumar), among many others -- not to mention a cameo by pop-punk three-piece Blink-182.

Three additional films in the main American Pie series subsequently released in theaters. Written by Herz and directed by James B. Rogers, American Pie 2 hit the big screen in 2001. American Wedding followed suit in 2003, with Herz once again returning as writer and Jesse Dylan taking over as director. Most recently, American Reunion released in theaters in 2012 from the writing-directing duo of Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Cobra Kai).

There is also a series of direct-to-video American Pie spinoff films, titled American Pie Presents. American Pie Presents: Band Camp originally released on DVD in 2005, followed by American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile in 2006, American Pie Presents: Beta House in 2007, American Pie Presents: The Book of Love in 2009 and, most recently, American Pie Presents: Girls' Rules in 2020.
