The following contains spoilers for American Jesus: Revelation #2, on sale now from Image Comics.

In American Jesus: Revelation, the U.S. president, Jodie Christianson, has begun plans to fully claim the world for Satan. He's been trained for decades as the Antichrist, but his dark forces are wary as the Messiah's also on Earth. This Second Coming is manifested in a young woman named Catalina, who's been prepped since birth for the battle to come at Megiddo.

Thus far, Jodie's been pretty brutal, using the pandemic to chip away at the world while waging wars and controlling world powers. He's also concocting a scheme to own people's souls, so they can't ascend to Heaven, infuriating Catalina even more. Shockingly, in issue #2 (by Mark Millar, Peter Gross, Tomm Coker, Daniel Freedman, VC's Cory Petit, and Jeanne McGee), the characters are inverted in a soul-crushing manner, leaving many readers devistated.

American Jesus' Jodie is Repenting

American Jesus' Jodie is repenting while Catalina is a destroyer

Jodie leaves the White House, tired of all the politics and demonic responsibilities. He returns to Illinois where he meets with Father O'Higgins, a priest who previously doubted Jodie after he resurrected a dog. This made O'Higgins think Jodie was the reincarnation of Jesus prior to him falling into Satan's fold.

Jodie goes to church with the priest, confessing his sins and the truth over being Satan's vessel. However, O'Higgins makes it clear that Jodie can return to the light. Unfortunately, satanic agents track the politician down, and batter and arrest the priest before ushering the president back to his post. However, it's clear Jodie's human experiences have steeped him in regret. He now hates the pressure he is under and is no longer interested in bringing about the end of the world.

American Jesus' Catalina is a Destroyer

American Jesus' Jodie is repenting while Catalina is a destroyer

Catalina, on the other hand, is revealed to be a destroyer, operating aggressively against the hypocrisy of humanity. She is appalled by how far mankind has fallen, appearing in multiple places to melt down idols, destroy the banking system, and create signs that indicate Judgment Day is on the horizon. She's invoking fear and terror, disappointed that people didn't follow God's word, and that the death of Christ was for nothing.

She even attacks the Vatican, decimating it in a manner reminiscent of the way Jesus demolished the temple. She makes a point about how decorations and paintings are kept out of greed instead of being sold to help the impoverished. Unfortunately, Catalina lacks both tact and diplomacy, losing control and bending reality to strip the Pope of his clothes in an effort to shame him. Ultimately she departs, sending a message through the devil's agent in the Catholic Church that the End of Days has arrived.

Catalina plans on both destroying Jodie in Megiddo and making the world pay for warping Christianity; however, she is acting far more vicious and unforgiving than Jodie. This turn of events teases that Millar might have one last twist in his plot, and that Catalina might actually be the Antichrist, while Jodie is its unwitting savior.
