American Horror Story Changes Houses, Characters in Season 2

If last night’s season finale of American Horror Story left you wondering where the psychosexual thriller could possibly go from there, hang onto your hats: The FX series is essentially being rebooted for Season 2.

Note: If you’ve not seen last night’s episode yet, you probably shouldn’t read on.

The finale, appropriately enough, gave a certain finality to the story of the Harmons, who moved cross-country in an effort to heal a family fractured by betrayal and miscarriage. Unfortunately, though, they ended up living in the lovely but haunted Murder House. With Ben now reunited with his wife and daughter — I’ll just leave it at that — their chapter of American Horror Story is finished.

“Those characters and those stories are done,” co-creator Ryan Murphy told reporters today. “Every season of the show will be a different haunting. Every season will have a beginning, a middle and an end. What you saw in the finale was the end of the Harmon house. The second season of the show will be a brand new home or building to haunt.”

However, that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of the Season 1 cast, as Murphy revealed he’s spoken to “a handful” of the actors about returning in new roles (hopefully that includes breakout star Evan Peters), something he planned from the start.

In addition to new characters and a new location — “It will obviously be in America, but in a completely different locale,” E! Online quotes Murphy as saying — Season 2 will also see a new theme. While infidelity was the thread running through the first season, the second will go in another direction, one apparently hinted at in the last three episodes.

American Horror Story is set to premiere in September or October on FX.
