American Horror Story Adds Kathy Bates For Season 3

Has American Horror Story found its "great icon" for Season 3? It's been announced that Kathy Bates has joined the cast of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's FX horror series as Jessica Lange's nemesis.

TV Line has the news about the Oscar-winning Misery star, who will reportedly play "the best friend of Lange’s new character, who turns into her enemy." Lange, by contrast, will be the third season's "glamour cat leading lady."

When Murphy was promoting the finale of Asylum, he admitted that the third season of the show will be all about "female power." "We do have a great icon [like Bloody Face this season], and it's a woman," he teased -- and who better to play that character than Bates? Just watching her square off against Lange will be a treat for fans, but having her as a villain will be even better. In retrospect, we don't know why we didn't think about her potential involvement in AHS before, because it really is a match made in television heaven.

Bates is the first new actress to be brought on board the third season of American Horror Story. There is an array of talent from earlier seasons coming back, including Taissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy, Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe. The focus of this new season hasn't been revealed yet, but Murphy has said it will be set in the modern day and take place in multiple cities. The 13-episode season is slated to air in the fall.
