WARNING: The following contains spoilers for American Gods Season 3, Episode 7, “Fire and Ice,” which aired Sunday on Starz.

While Mr. Wednesday has made some progress expanding his ranks for his planned war, he's also suffered some terrible losses. The band Blood Death, which was recruiting more followers for Wednesday, and a bar full of his devotees have perished; meanwhile, Demeter has abandoned Wednesday, refusing to join his war. Saddened by his former wife leaving him high and dry, Wednesday is at a loss for words as Cordelia drives him to his next destination, but their silence is soon broken when a flaming corpse falls from the sky.

Wednesday inspects it while an unknown being watches from the woods. The Allfather quickly understands the danger they're in, ushering Cordelia back in the car before finally telling her the truth about her job and him. As they flee, the unknown being inspects the body, getting a vision of who the man was. He appears to be some religious figure who was a follower of Blood Death and Wednesday, but something killed him, dropping off his corpse as a warning to Wednesday.

To protect Cordelia, Wednesday sends her to Lakeside to find Shadow before arriving himself to convince his son to accompany him. He also reveals that he believes the killer is a berserker -- an ancient Norse warrior who fights while in a frenzy state of mind -- who was supposed to protect him. Shadow denies the offer to come with him, but Cordelia agrees to follow Wednesday, and the two go after the singer of Blood Death, Johan, who the Allfather presumes is the berserker given his past behavior.

After not finding him at home, Wednesday learns he's going to a dentist, so he believes Johan is targeting Tyr, one of his oldest allies, next. However, upon entering Tyr's office, Wednesday discovers Johan gutted and dead, along with a note claiming that Tyr has taken Shadow to the wolf's den, with the War God having gone to collect Shadow, pretending Odin sent him to do so.

Tyr and Wednesday go back centuries, fighting in the American Revolutionary War together, but there history is rocky at best. While Tyr planned to court Demeter, Wednesday charmed her more, marrying the love of Tyr's life before abandoning her after their baby died. Tyr seems to still care for Demeter immensely, and despite pledging loyalty to Odin and his war, he actively is against how he treats Demeter.

This, along with Odin often treating Tyr as a subordinate, may have finally pushed the War God to turn on the Allfather, as the end of "Fire and Ice" reveals Tyr was behind the deaths of all Odin's followers this season. Meanwhile, Johan was fulfilling his duty, attempting to protect Wednesday from Try's bloody revenge, but he failed, losing his life in the process. Now it's up to Wednesday to find Shadow before it's too late.
