The popular Borne novel series will be heading to the small screen as AMC Studios has acquired the rights to the books.

Deadline revealed the sci-fi novel series will be adapted into a potential television series for the cable network. The series' author, Jeff VanderMeer, has been tapped as executive producer and creative consultant for the show. VanderMeer is best known as the author of Annihilation, which was adapted into a critically acclaimed film last year.

In a statement on the acquisition, VanderMeer said, “I’m so excited about this partnership and working with AMC on the Borne universe. I’ve had such productive, energizing, and creative conversations with the wonderful folks involved and look forward to the road ahead.”

Borne follows scavenger Rachel in a dystopian future created by an evil company. As she tries to survive in a ruined city, Rachel discovers a mysterious creature she must keep secret.

“The Borne Universe is a totally unique piece of IP and Jeff has created a vivid post-apocalyptic world with enormous opportunity for a visual medium like television,” Ben Davis, executive vice president of programming for AMC Studios, said of the acquisition.

The first book, Borne, was published in 2017 and became a huge bestseller as well as a finalist for the Arthur C. Clarke Award and an NEA Big Read. Borne was followed by stand-alone novels The Strange Bird, also published in 2017, and Dead Astronauts, published this year. The latest installment has received widespread critical acclaim and inclusion on Esquire’s list of the best books of the year.

Dead Astronauts was released for purchase on December 3.
