Amazon Prime's original drama Utopia, starring John Cusack, has been canceled following its first season.
The show was a reboot of a British thriller series of the same title, which centered on a global pandemic much like the coronavirus (COVID-19) affecting the world's population in the present day. Its first season ran for nine episodes. Although it attracted a cult following, Amazon's reboot had a lukewarm critical reception and will not be renewed for a second season, according to THR.
Like its British predecessor, Utopia told the story of a group of comic book readers and the conspiracies that unfold as they discover a deadly pandemic. It was produced by Gillian Flynn and had an unusually long period of production which began when it was picked up by HBO. The show was later moved to Amazon Prime, which currently has a number of successful and promising shows on its schedule including The Expanse, The Boys and the upcoming live-action The Lord of the Rings series.
Created by Gillian Flynn, Utopia starred Dan Byrd, Ashleigh LaThrop, Jessica Rothe, Desmin Borges, Javon "Wanna" Walton, Sasha Lane, Farrah Mackenzie, Christopher Denham, Cory Michael Smith, John Cusack and Rainn Wilson. The first season of the series is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
