Author Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan character has appeared in more than 15 novels. With such a rich background to work with, it’s no surprise that Amazon would add the CIA operative to its growing stable of shows, with John Krasinski set to star. Although a premiere date hasn’t been announced for “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” Deadline reports a director has been found for the debut episode: Oscar nominee Morten Tyldum, best known for “The Imitation Game” and the Chris Pratt-Jennifer Lawrence sci-fi thriller “Passengers.”
Dan Sackheim (“The Americans”) will serve as series producer and will direct multiple episodes of “Jack Ryan.”
Krasinksi, who’s perhaps best known as the prank-pulling Jim Halpert from the American version of “The Office,” recently stretched his action-star muscles in the Michael Bay-directed “13 Hours.”
The drama will mark Jack Ryan’s first appearance on the small screen. The role has been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford (twice), Ben Affleck and, most recently, Chris Pine in 2014’s “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.” The drama will essentially reboot the character, again, starting Ryan off as a fresh-faced CIA Analyst who has a knack of knowing when and where terrorists might strike. Australian actress Abbie Cornish (“Sucker Punch”) will play Ryan’s love interest, Cathy Mueller.
The show is co-produced by Paramount TV and Skydance TV. Joining them as executive producers are Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, Carlton Cuse (“Lost) and Graham Roland (“Fringe”).
