Two years after The Girl in the Spider's Web hit theaters, Amazon is developing a television series based on the Millennium series protagonist Lisbeth Salander.

According to Variety, the series is currently titled The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but it will not be a direct adaptation of the celebrated novel or a retelling of the 2011 film. Instead, the show will tell a new story with new characters and settings, placing Salander in the modern world.

Left Bank Pictures CEO Andy Harries will executive produce the project with Rob Bullock. Left Bank and Amazon Studios will produce the television series in conjunction with Sony Pictures Television.

The series' namesake, along with the rest of the Millennium series, has sold over 100 million copies worldwide, making one of the best-selling book series of all time. The original trilogy was written by Stieg Larsson, with the second trilogy being written by David Lagercrantz. It spawned a series of graphic novels, a Swedish film series and two Hollywood adaptations (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl in the Spider's Web).

At this time, casting announcements and production start dates have not been announced.
