"Coming to America was a cultural phenomenon that is one of the most loved and celebrated comedies of all time," Head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke said in a statement. "Thanks to Eddie Murphy’s comedic genius along with the brilliant filmmakers, writers and fabulous cast, we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this new adventure. We know audiences around the world will fall in love with this hilarious, joyful movie that will surely become a timeless favorite."

Coming 2 America will see Eddie Murphy reprise his role as Prince Akeem and travel from the fictional nation of Zamunda to Queens, NY. Wesley Snipes will star in the film as Akeem's new nemesis.

The film previously eyed a December debut in theaters, but the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the underperformance of films including Tenet and The New Mutants led to the Amazon purchase.

Directed by Craig Brewer, Coming 2 America stars Eddie Murphy as Akeem/Randy, Arsenio Hall as Semmi, Jermaine Fowler as Lavelle, Leslie Jones as Lavelle's mother, Tracy Morgan as Reem, James Earl Jones as Jaffe Joffer and Louie Anderson as Maurice. The film arrives on Amazon Prime Video March 5, 2021.
