Amazon's upcoming Lord of the Rings series has found its villain in former Game of Thrones actor Joseph Mawle.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mawle has boarded the upcoming show as a character (ostensibly) named Oren, who will apparently serve as the main antagonist. The publication cites inside sources, though Amazon has declined to issue a statement at this time. Mawle joins actors Will Poulter and Markella Kavenagh on Amazon's ambitious fantasy series.
On Game of Thrones, Mawle played Benjen Stark, who appeared in eight episodes of the popular HBO series. Benjen made his debut in Season 1, though was MIA until Season 6. He was last seen in the Season 7 episode "Beyond the Wall," which saw his death.
Based on the novels by J.R.R Tolkien's -- which previously inspired director Peter Jackson's beloved film trilogy -- Amazon's Lord of the Rings series takes place during Middle Earth's Second Age, before the events of the main trilogy. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay serve as showrunners. J.A. Bayona will direct the first two episodes, as well as produce alongside Belén Atienza. Writers Gennifer Hutchison, Jason Cahill and Justin double executive produce alongside Lindsey Weber, Bruce Richmond, Gene Kelly and Sharon Tal Yguado.
Amazon Studios' Lord of the Rings has yet to receive a premiere date. Production is expected to begin in 2020.
