In the wake of Syfy's cancellation of The Expanse following its third season, Amazon has decided to pick-up the fan-favorite sci-fi series for a fourth season.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Amazon Studios had been looking to pick-up the series, which was described as one of CEO Jeff Bezos' favorite properties, however, at the time, conversations were said to be still be in the early stages. However, since then, a deal has closed as Bezos officially announced Amazon Studios had ordered the series for a fourth season while at the National Space Society’s International Space Development Conference in Los Angeles last night.

Following the news that The Expanse would be returning for a fourth season, Alcon Entertainment co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson announced their excitement over moving to Amazon. “We are deeply grateful that Jeff Bezos, Jen Salke, and their team at Amazon have shown such faith in our show. We also want to thank Laura Lancaster, head of Alcon Television for her tireless efforts. We are fully aware that this wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the staggering outpouring of support from the most creative, hardest working sci-fi fans around the world. From reddit campaigns to airplanes, we say thank you. It worked!”

When it was announced that Syfy had cancelled The Expanse, fans stormed social media with a campaign to try and save the critically-acclaimed series. However, they didn't just keep their actions limited to the Internet. In a more eye-popping stunt, they sent an airplane bearing a message pleading for the series’ renewal to be flown over Amazon Studios once it was rumored Amazon was in talks to save the show. While perhaps a bit out there, their methods appear to have worked and The Expanse is officially coming back.

The Expanse is an adaptation of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck’s book series that began in 2011 with Leviathan Wakes (written under the pseudonym James S. A. Corey). The series follows the doings of politicians, activists and a small crew of miners who are all irrevocably changed by their interactions with an alien protomolecule that can completely reshape reality and break the laws of physics.
