Amazon Studios is currently developing a television adaptation of the 1997 film Event Horizon, which was far from a massive success but maintains a passionate cult following among sci-fi/horror lovers.

The series is being developed by Amazon and Paramount Television and is being produced by Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin -- who served as producers for the original film -- alongside Jeremy Platt and Adam Wingard, the latter of whom is known for such films as the Blair Witch reboot and the live-action Death Note adaptation.

Event Horizon was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starred Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill as Captain Miller of the Lewis and Clark rescue ship and Dr. Weir, inventor of the gravity drive, respectively. The film centered on the Lewis and Clark's ill-fated rescue mission to find and secure the crew of the titular starship, the Event Horizon. However, what they found instead was a massacre and a powerful alien presence.

The film is notable not only for its memorably gruesome scenes but for its troubled production, as well as its performance in theaters. Event Horizon opened to less-than-stellar reviews and failed to earn back its estimated budget of $60 million, grossing just $26 million from its domestic release.

It will certainly be interesting to see if the relatively unrestricted format of a television series will allow Amazon and Paramount to avoid the issues that held the film back from critical success.
