Amazon's The Dark Tower TV Series Casts Its Gunslinger

Despite the box office and critical disappointment with Nikolaj Arcel's The Dark Tower movie, plans for the purposed television series based in the same world are moving forward.

That series has now cast the man who will portray Roland Deschain, and it almost assures that Idris Elba will not return to portray the legendary Gunslinger in a bookend to the Amazon Prime series. The Dark Tower television series will see Sam Strike (Nightflyers) take on the role of Roland, according to Deadline.

While many Stephen King fans dismissed the movie for straying to far from the books and trying to tell a different story in the spirit of The Dark Tower series, the Amazon Prime series is rumored to be a faithful retelling of the books.

Interestingly, this will not be a retelling of The Dark Tower series itself, which saw Roland teaming with friends Eddie, Susannah and Jake to search for the Dark Tower. Instead, this will pull stories out of the books where Roland talks about his childhood in flashbacks.

This means that the Amazon Prime series will tell the stories of Roland as a young man, along with his friends Alain and Cuthbert, as well as the love of his life, Susan Delgado. Also likely playing a role is his teacher, Cort, and his father's advisor, Marten Broadcloak, which is an alias of Randall Flagg.

Jasper Pääkkönen (Vikings) was also cast in a co-starring role and it looks like he might be the man to portray either Cort or Broadcloack, with Deadline speculating that he is the antagonistic Broadcloak, which makes him the future Randall Flagg.

There is no release date yet for Amazon's The Dark Tower. Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead), Akiva Goldsman and Stephen King will serve as producers.
