Artist Jerad S.Marantz shared an early take on the Spider-Man villain The Lizard from 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man on Instagram.

This Lizard differs from the one eventually used in the film, portraying a much creepier version of Curt Conners' evil alter-ego. Marantz's Instagram caption simply reads, "Early pass on #thelizard for #amazingspiderman #docconnors #drconnors #marvel #spiderman #conceptart #creaturedesign #soney #zbrush #lizard #conceptarr"

In the film, the Lizard was shown retaining some more humanoid features while in his reptilian form, a point of contention for some. While not a direct adaptation of the character's look from the original comic books, this concept art is more explicitly reptilian in facial structure.

The Lizard and his human alter ego Dr. Curt Connors debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #6 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in November of 1963. He would become a reoccurring friend to the web-slinger over the years, with his reptilian persona sometimes wrestling control to wreak havoc.

Directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Sally Field, Martin Sheen, Denis Leary and Rhys Ifans. The film was released in theaters on July 3, 2012. The film is now available on DVD.
