Renew Your Vows Just Gave Wolverine a New Teen Sidekick - Sort Of

renew-your-vows-header

Apart from his healing and Adamantium claws, one of Wolverine's most defining aspects is how he often becomes a surrogate father. Despite his gruff demeanor and high body count, young girls seem to imprint on him pretty easily. It's primarily extended to the X-Men corner of the Marvel Universe, with examples being Jubilee and Kitty Pryde, along with his actual "daughter" Laura Kinney.

The alternate universe of Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows has been around since the end of Secret Wars in 2016. In this Earth, Peter, Mary Jane and their teenage daughter Annie are a crimefighting family. While Annie acquired her father's powers and goes by Spiderling, MJ uses a Venom symbiote under her control to operate as Spinneret.

In a preview of Renew Your Vows #19, Peter and Annie are seen going through old vacation photos, one of which happens to be of Pete and MJ on a beach, prompting a flashback to eight years ago. Like every parent, it was hard to get away from life, thanks to factors outside of their control: Not only was Annie developing her new spider powers, but MJ was focused getting her fashion store business off the ground and using her own money. Fortunately, the two parents were able to take some time away from it all to go on a cruise for some much-needed rest and relaxation. However, before the ship leaves the port, Peter decides to call Wolverine, who's babysitting Annie during the cruise.

In typical Logan fashion, he answers the phone at just the wrong time, as he's currently in the middle of another X-Men adventure. But ever the diligent babysitter, babysitting means having Annie suit up to join with Wolverine's fellow X-Men Nightcrawler and Jean Grey to fight a Sentinel that failed to be dismantled. With Spiderling letting out an audible "Woo-hoo!", Wolverine has gained himself yet another sidekick -- whether Spider-Man likes it or not.

Though Logan is something of an unorthodox babysitter mentor, he's probably better at it than Tony Stark or Clint Barton. Also, Wolverine's training back then has certainly helped Annie grow as a hero in the present-day, so some good came out of it.

Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #19 goes on sale May 30 from Marvel Comics.
