Marvel Comics has given CBR an exclusive preview of Amazing Spider-Man #74/#875, by Nick Spencer, Patrick Gleason, Mark Bagley, Marcelo Ferreira and more. In the preview, Harry Osborn/Kindred talks with Mephisto, with the former expressing remorse and shame about his recent actions. Harry then asks Mephisto why he chose him. The devil reveals he was only using Harry to get at, presumably, Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

There may be a connection here to 2007's "One More Day" crossover, by J. Michael Straczynski and Joe Quesada.. Following the events of Civil War, the revelation Peter was Spider-Man led to Aunt May being shot. Mephisto then traded her life for Peter's marriage to Mary Jane Watson. The event proved quite controversial, and there have been a lot of theories Spencer's run on Amazing Spider-Man would undo "One More Day."

In this case, the potential connection to that story lies in Mephisto's goal: Capturing a soul. "One More Day" saw the devil opting not to take Peter's soul, instead focusing on something more practical. As Mephisto explains in Sensational Spider-Man #41, someone who sells their soul to help someone else will "suffer righteously." Mephisto adds, "Knowing what's to come, there's still a more than even chance I'll get your soul straight-up, and that's a far more appetizing prospect." As such Mephisto, who isn't generally associated with Spider-Man, may be seeking out the hero as part of a plan, the seeds for which were sown in "One More Day," to get his soul in the long-run by torturing him with Harry's return and the upheaval of his life.
