Marvel Comics revealed in December that writer Dan Slott will depart The Amazing Spider-Man after a 10-year run. June's Issue 801 will be his farewell to the series, of which he moves on to Tony Stark: Iron Man, illustrated by Valerio Schiti (Guardians of the Galaxy). Marcos Martin, who worked with Slott during his tenure on the title, will provide art for his final issue, as well the cover, which Marvel debuted with its June solicitations.

In an interview with CBR, Slott described The Amazing Spider-Man #801 as "not really a coda on the 'Go Down Swinging' arc" before adding that "It’s everything I love about Spider-Man."
