“Amazing Spider-Man” Breaks Tuesday Box Office Records At $35 Million

In its first day in theaters, Sony and director Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” is already doing very well for itself, breaking the domestic box office record for a Tuesday opening with $35 million. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the previous record holder was “Transformers” which raked in $27.9 million on the same Tuesday in 2007.

The fourth big screen adaptation of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s classic Marvel Comics character is expected to take in around $125 million over the six-day July 4 holiday, which would make it the second biggest film of the summer so far next to Marvel Studios’ “The Avengers.”

Five years ago, the release of director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 brought in a $151.1 million debut in May 2007, which set a three-day record (it’s since slipped to fifth place). Spider-Man 2 opened in the same six-day holiday frame in 2004, raking in $180 million (about $219 million when adjusted for inflation).

“The Amazing Spider-Man” stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Campbell Scott, C. Thomas Howell, Embeth Davidtz and Annie Parisse.

Stay tuned to CBR for more on its box office performance.
