Sony's 2012 Marvel film The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield will swing onto Netflix this June.

According to What's on Netflix, the first entry in Sony's Amazing Spider-Man duology will arrive on the platform on Wednesday, June 1. This comes following the massive worldwide success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw Garfield reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man to team up with Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland's respective versions of the character.

Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man released in theaters five years after the mixed reception of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3. After plans for a fourth film in Raimi's series fell through, Sony decided to start from scratch by retelling Peter Parker's origin with more emphasis on his high school years and parentage. Garfield was coming off the heels of the critical acclaim for his performance in 2010's The Social Network and was paired with Zombieland's Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. The film saw Garfield's Spidey go up against Dr. Curt Connors/the Lizard (Rhys Ifans) to stop him from turning humans into reptiles with the chemicals he used on himself. Reviews were generally favorable at the time, largely due to Garfield and Stone's performances, and The Amazing Spider-Man grossed over $750 million worldwide.

The success of Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe motivated Sony to make the 2014 sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, into a launchpad for its standalone universe of the Web-Slinger's licensed characters. However, despite a solid box office haul comparable to that of its predecessor, the sequel was met with lukewarm reviews, which criticized it for dedicating too much time to building that universe. Marvel and Sony soon cut a deal to bring Spider-Man into the MCU, with Tom Holland debuting as the character in 2016's Captain America: Civil War.

Garfield's reprisal in No Way Home was rumored for months before the film's release. The actor publicly denied any involvement in the MCU project, despite various leaks of Garfield in No Way Home going viral online. When the film finally hit theaters in December 2021, fans welcomed Garfield back with open arms. Since then, those same fans have called for Sony to produce a third installment of the Amazing Spider-Man franchise. That said, Garfield claims he has "no plans" to return to playing the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man anytime soon.

The Amazing Spider-Man crawls onto Netflix on June 1.
