Amazing Spider-Man 2 Looking For ‘Dark and Edgy’ Harry Osborn

With all of the stars for the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man seemingly in place — director Marc Webb all but confirmed Jamie Foxx is in talks to play Electro — Sony Pictures is now turning its attention to casting the secondary roles, namely that of Harry Osborn, Peter Parker’s best friend turned worst enemy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, studio insiders say the part, played in Sam Raimi’s trilogy by James Franco, has been reconfigured: While a bigger, athletic actor initially was being sought, Sony is now said to be looking for someone more “dark and edgy.” Actors mentioned include Brady Corbet (Melancholia), Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) and Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures), but additional names could be added to the list.

Written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner based on a previous draft by James Vanderbilt, is believed to be based on — or at least build toward — Marvel’s watershed 1973 storyline “The Night Gwen Stacy Died.” Of course, Green Goblin, not Electro, was the antagonist of that arc, so the adaptation would be a loose one. Stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone will reprise their roles as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, joined by Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson.

Expected to being production in February, the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man opens in 3D on May 2, 2014.
