The Power Rangers have been getting something of a revival lately thanks to the 2017 reboot Power Rangers film, but it isn’t as if the series hasn’t been around for a while. After first premiering in 1993, the series continued for 24 seasons across a total of 20 different series and three theatrical films. Not only have the Power Rangers been around for a long time, the franchise has created some of the most memorable characters around, and thanks to a devoted cosplaying community, those characters have been popping up at conventions all over the world.
Cosplaying as a Power Ranger, Zord or any other character from the franchise is hardly new, but thanks to the 2017 film, they have seen a marked increase. These new cosplayers have put their own spin on the original costumes as well as the movie-inspired duds to come up with some truly special representations. Whether talking about an amateur cosplayer or someone who attends conventions professionally, there are some amazing Power Rangers cosplays out there. We think we found the best of the best, but realize there are many more out there, so if we missed any of your favorite cosplayers, please sound off in the comments and let us know!
15. YELLOW RANGER – AAYLA COSPLAY
The Yellow Ranger has been around since the very first episode of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers aired back on August 28, 1993. Originally, the character was portrayed by Thuy Trang who tragically passed away at the age of 27 in a car accident on September 3, 2001. Since that time, the Yellow Ranger has been played by both men and women, having been portrayed most recently by Becky G in the 2017 film.
Andriele is a Canadian Cosplayer who goes by the name Aayla Cosplay. Andriele describes herself as a gamer and Twitcher who cosplays as any of her favorite characters from Marvel, DC, Star Wars and Destiny. In addition to knocking out a killer Yellow Ranger, she has also tackled an impressive Twi’lek Sith and many other characters from the video game franchise Destiny.
14. PINK RANGER – KARTA COSPLAY
When it comes to cosplaying as a Power Ranger, many women choose to emulate the lovely and talented Amy Jo Johnson, who played the first Pink Ranger. Ms. Johnson has appeared in the original series, Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, Power Rangers Super Megaforce and she made a cameo appearance as Angel Grove Citizen in the 2017 Power Rangers movie.
Catherine, who goes by Karta Cosplay, is a Canadian “cosplayer and geek” whose interests include pop culture, comic books, Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Retro Gaming, Sci-Fi and more. Catherine is also a member of the Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club, which is an international club of cosplayers devoted to the art and design of the Star Wars universe. Some of Catherine’s best cosplaying has been done in support of the club and its activities.
13. RED RANGER – JONATHAN DE MOSCO
The original Red Ranger from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was played by Austin St. John who continued to play the role in Power Rangers: Zeo (though with a different power set) and Power Rangers: Wild Force. St. John’s acting work was mainly focused on the Power Rangers franchise, though he has since become a paramedic. He worked alongside the U.S. military providing health care in the Middle East during combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Jonathan de Mosco is a Canadian blogger who lives and works out of Montreal, Quebec. Professionally, he is a blogger at L’Œil du Recruteur and a Recruiter at Arobas Personnel, though he appears to spend much of his time appreciating his love of Disney and Star Wars. He is a member of the 501st Legion, which is an international Star Wars cosplay club. He dresses up as a Storm Trooper on occasion and is clearly a lover of the franchise.
12. BLACK RANGER – MARC-ANDRÉ SAUVÉ
The first actor to take on the role of the Black Ranger was Walter Emanuel Jones. Jones continued to play the role throughout the original series though he returned to play other roles on Power Rangers Lost Galaxy and Power Rangers Wild Force. The character’s final appearance came in the 21st season, Power Rangers Super Megaforce. The character was most recently portrayed by Ludi Lin in the 2017 Power Rangers film.
Marc-André Sauvé is another Canadian cosplayer from Montreal, Quebec. While he clearly has a love for the Power Rangers franchise, his true inspiration appears to be characters from the Star Wars universe. Sauvé is a member of the 501st Legion and while you can sometimes see him as the Black Ranger or even Cyclops from the X-Men, he most often cosplays as various members of the Sith or Jedi Order in support of his Legion activities.
11. TYRANNOSAURUS REX DINOZORD – THEPINKRANGER
When it came time for Jason Lee Scott, the Red Ranger, to pilot a Zord, it was the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord–the most powerful of all the Dinozords! The T-Rex Dinozord came with claws and a tail it could use in combat, making it a fierce competitor all its own. The T-Rex Dinozord also came equipped with a sonic weapon in the form of powerful beastly roars. When forming the Megazord, it became the head and torso and would eventually go on to help create the Red Dragon Thunderzord.
Zords aren’t often the target of cosplayers due to their difficulty, but that didn’t stop Thepink Ranger, an American cosplayer and gamer. You can’t tell from the picture, but Thepink Ranger is a woman and while her first name is not presently known, Sergeant Townsend is an Army Veteran who served in Afghanistan, Kuwait and Korea.
10. ZORDON – UNKNOWN COSPLAYER
Zordon is the immortal enemy or Rita Repulsa who was trapped in a time warp following their final battle more than 10,000 years ago. While Repulsa was trapped in a dumpster on the moon, Zordon created the Command Center with the help of Alpha 5. He appears in the form of a disembodied face and was originally portrayed by David J. Fielding. Brian Cranston took on the role in the 2017 Power Rangers film.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t identify the cosplayer in question, so if anyone knows this genius’ true identity, please let us know in the comments so we can give him the credit he deserves! As you can see, he not only approximated the disembodied face of Zordon, he also set up the Command Center along with all five of the original Power Rangers. Those wires hanging below the surface help to light up various parts of the costume.
9. RITA REPULSA – NEBULLALUBEN
When the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers began, their principal antagonist was none other than Rita Repulsa. Repulsa was the archenemy of the Power Rangers and Zordon, who trapped her on the moon for 10 millennia. She was initially played by Machiko Soga in the original series and was most recently portrayed by Elizabeth Banks in the 2017 Power Rangers film.
Laura Sánchez is a video game enthusiast and cosplayer from Spain who goes by the name Nebulaluben. Sánchez enjoys making her own costumes and considers herself an amateur photographer. In addition to her obvious love of all things Power Rangers, she devoted much of her cosplaying activities to the Star Wars universe with a powerful rendition of Rey and also to various video game franchises including an incredible gender-bent version of Commander Shepard from Mass Effect.
8. ALPHA 5 – ADSCOSPLAY88
Alpha 5 is the devoted robot from Edinoi who works as Zordon’s trusted assistant. After Zordon became stuck in a time stream following his final battle with Rita Repulsa, Alpha 5 was instrumental in the creation and upkeep of the Command Center. He was initially played by Sandi Seline and voiced by Richard Steven Horvitz in the original series. Bill Hader voiced the character most recently in the 2017 Power Rangers film.
Adam is a British cosplayer who goes by the name ads cosplay 88. As a cosplayer, Adam appears to spend most of his time portraying various characters from the Power Rangers and Mortal Kombat franchises, though he has also created costumes in support of various characters from Gears of War and other popular franchises.
7. BLACK DINO THUNDER – DJZIPPY
The 12th season of the Power Rangers franchise introduced Power Rangers Dino Thunder and along for the ride was Jason David Frank as Dr. Tommy Oliver, the Black Dino Ranger. Oliver was previously the Green Ranger, the White Ranger, Zeo Ranger V, Red and he was also the first Red Turbo Ranger. Frank is also an accomplished mixed martial artist and is credited to the Power Rangers franchise from the very beginning all the way to Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t identify the cosplayer in question so if anyone knows this genius’ true identity, please let us know in the comments so we can give him the credit he deserves! This unique take on the costume employs a slightly more three-dimensional look than a traditional Black Dino Thunder, which is why it is perfect for this list!
6. SAMURAI YELLOW – PROCRASTIRANGER COSPLAY
When the 18th season of the Power Rangers rolled around, the show switched to Power Rangers Samurai featuring some new and interesting samurai-inspired costumes. Samurai Yellow was portrayed by Brittany Anne Pirtle who continued to play the character in Power Rangers Samurai: Clash of the Red Rangers – The Movie, Power Rangers Megaforce and Power Rangers Super Megaforce: The Legendary Battle.
Procrastiranger Cosplay is an American cosplayer who lives and works out of Madison, Wisconsin. She spends most of her cosplaying time creating impressive versions of numerous characters from the Power Rangers franchise including Samurai Yellow, Violet and others. She is also a fan of and cosplayer who supports Kamen Rider, which is a Japanese series similar to Power Rangers. Her Kivala cosplay is particularly impressive.
5. WHITE RANGER – IRON JOE
The White Ranger first appeared in the second season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers when it became necessary to add a new ranger. He was revealed to be Tommy, the original Green Ranger who now has a new, more powerful Zord: the Tigerzord. Tommy was played by Jason David Frank, who went on to lead the team as the White Ranger and then the White Ninja Ranger.
Iron Joe is a cosplayer out of Washington state who works tirelessly with his wife (@JujuBean) to create some incredible Power Rangers cosplays. He created the White Ranger costume for an appearance at the Emerald City Comicon in 2015 alongside his wife who, of course, took on the role of the Pink Ranger. He detailed the creation process in its entirety on a message board so you can follow his steps and even make one of these amazing costumes for yourself!
4. GEDOU SHINKEN RED – ANDREASTARCHILD
The Red Samurai appeared in the 18th season of Power Rangers Samurai played by Alex Heartman. Across the pond, Shinken Red popped up in the 33rd entry of Samurai Sentai Shinkenger who is played by Tori Matsuzuka. Both series are similar, which is why we featured a mash-up cosplay of characters from each series for everyone to enjoy. Super Sentai is the Japanese source material for what became the Power Rangers.
AndreaStarchild is an Italian cosplayer who created the above homage to the Shinkenred in Gedou version of the Evil Samurai Red Ranger. The cosplay is an amalgam of Shinkenred from Samurai Sentai Shinkenger and the Red Samurai from Power Rangers Super Samurai. As both series are very similar, it seemed appropriate to throw this epic mash-up on this list!
3. MEGAZORD – D-SLIM
When an enemy is just too much for a normal sized Power Ranger to handle, they hop into their respective Zords and save the day! Then, there are those times when even a Zord won’t cut it and it comes time for the group to form into a Megazord! These giant combo Zords combine all five smaller Zords into a single fighting machine with each appendage made up of a single Zord while the head and torso are formed by another.
Zords are tough enough to cosplay, but taking on the challenge of a Megazord is something you won’t find many trying to tackle. D-Slim absolutely nailed it with this Megazord cosplay he created in early 2017. D-Slim is an American cosplayer who lives and works out of California. His costumes are often intricately detailed and incredibly accurate. You can check out his work on his website here.
2. BLUE RANGER – KJCHARMEDFREAK
David Yost portrayed the first Blue Ranger when he permiered the character in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers back in 1993. He went on to become the second team’s second-in-command as well as the Blue Ninja Raider. Yost played the character for 153 episodes of the first series and continued to play the Blue Ranger on Power Rangers Zeo for 40 episodes, which concluded his time acting for the franchise.
KJCharmedFreak is an American cosplayer and model who, as his name implies, is a huge fan of the television series Charmed. His YouTube channel is littered with references to the series though he does occasionally cosplay as his favorite Power Ranger from time to time. Dare to check out his DeviantArt page to check him out in all his banana hammock glory (with occasional cosplay pics of course).
1. AQUA RANGER/WHITE RANGER – GRILLO & REESE
This last entry is more of a story than simply a cosplay piece. During a photoshoot featuring all the members of Dino Super Charge from the 12th season of the Power Rangers series, two cosplayers stood out for something you don’t tend to see at these sorts of events. The White Ranger and the Aqua Ranger had themselves a personal moment they chose to share with the world.
Anthony Grillo, who was dressed as the White Ranger, asked the cameraman to linger as he got down on one knee and proposed to his partner, James Reese, dressed as the Aqua Ranger. “Anthony got down on one knee, in his ranger suit to ask me to be his forever ranger! Today, we are announcement [sic] our engagement! I said yes! Rangers Together, Love Forever!” Reese accepted and the pair made both cosplaying and Power Rangers history!
