When he was first introduced in the 1940s, Batman's personality hadn't been firmly established yet. In the next several decades, the character would become defined by a firm set of values. Batman doesn't use guns or lethal force. He gives his craziest rogues are given a chance to redeem themselves.

There are versions of Batman that aren't quite as noble. There are realities where Batman exists as something other than a hero. He can sometimes be a terrifying menace that crosses every line and boundary. He can be anything from a hero to a villain.

JLA: The Nail was released in 1998. The comic was created by Alan Davis and Mark Farmer. The Nail was written in an alternate timeline where Superman wasn't raised as a Kent. This world's version of Clark Kent was raised in an Amish family and never became a superhero.

This world's Joker died shortly after killing Batgirl and Robin. Batman is seen as a murderer. Batman's supposed guilt results in horrible press for the Justice League. No one is willing to trust the Earth's heroes anymore.

During the events of Countdown to Final Crisis, Jason Todd is transported to an alternate universe. Jason journeys to Earth-51 with some friends. The group learns that crime has been almost completely eliminated on that earth.

At one point, Jason finds himself tied up. The Earth-51 Batman is holding a gun to Jason's head. Jason learns that this world's Batman had killed the Joker. The Joker's death came after he had killed the Earth-51 Jason.

8 A Time-Traveling Batman Tries To Kill Jonathan Kent

During the Super Sons of Tomorrow, Jonathan Kent becomes targeted by a time-traveling Batman. This version of Batman is later revealed to be former Robin, Tim Drake.

When this Batman first appears on the scene, he uses a dart gun to knock out Lois Lane. He reveals his mission is to stop Jonathan Kent from exploding. This version of Tim also kidnapped the younger version of himself and enacted Brother Eye.

7 Damian Wayne Becomes Batman In A Horrific Future

Batman #666 was released in 2007. The comic shows a possible future for Bruce Wayne's son, Damian Wayne. Damian is considered to be a threat. Police commissioner, Barbara Gordon, was trying to arrest him.

When Barbara tries shooting Damian, she horrifically realizes the bullets have no effect on him. It is revealed that Damian had sold his soul for the power to defend Gotham. Damian's life seems to revolve around saving Gotham at any cost.

6 Batman's Actions Result In Martha And Thomas Wayne Being Killed

This three-part comic ran from Batman Volume 3 #45-47. A time traveler, Booster Gold, comes up with the perfect wedding present for his idol, Batman.

He travels back in time to stop Martha and Thomas Wayne from being killed in front of their young son. Meanwhile, Dick Grayson becomes a Batman with a broken moral compass. When Dick arrives at Wayne Manor with guns, Bruce's parents die once again.

5 Thomas Wayne Becomes A Deadly Batman In Flashpoint

Flashpoint was released in 2011. The series was written by Geoff Johns with art by Andy Kubert. When the Flash travels back in time to stop his mother from dying, the entire world ends up being altered. His friends in the Justice League all end up suffering from his actions.

In the new reality, it wasn't Thomas and Martha who died that night in Crime Alley. The death of Bruce Wayne encouraged Thomas to become Batman. He was a much darker Batman and when he returned later to the main continuity, he ended up killing Alfred Pennyworth.

4 The Millerverse Batman Seems To Operate Without Morals

Fans are used to seeing a Batman that refuses to overstep certain boundaries. The Millerverse Batman lives without many of the morals of his mainstream counterpart.

After kidnapping a young orphan, he breaks an already fragile teenager. That orphan, Dick Grayson, would grow up to become a villain. The Millerverse Batman has been seen using guns. He doesn't have Batman's usual reverence for life. This version of Batman goes too far a few too many times, coming off as more of a hero than a villain.

3 An Evil Version Of Batman Exists As Owlman On Earth 2

JLA: Earth 2 was released in 2000 and written by Grant Morrison. The comic tells the story of two, opposite Earths. On one Earth, Batman is a superhero who always tries to do the right thing. The other Earth is home to an evil version of Batman called Owlman.

Owlman is from an Earth where evil will always triumph over good. His secret identity is Thomas Wayne, Jr. He was driven into the life of crime after witnessing the deaths of his mother and younger brother, Bruce Wayne.

His exposure to some of Joker's poison twisted his mind. He was still himself, but he adopted the personality of the Joker. In a matter of time, he began to systematically eliminate his closest allies. With the Bat-Family and Justice League gone, no one could stop him from corrupting his young son, Damian.

1 Batman Becomes An Evil Ruler

Batman/Superman: Absolute Power was released in 2005. The series was created by Jeph Loeb and Carlos Pacheco. In the series, a time-traveling group of supervillains alter history. Batman and Superman are taken in by the villains who raise them to be earth's evil dictators.

The two decide to try and fix history. While in the past, Batman becomes overcome by emotion and ends up murdering Joe Chill. He was just one of the many lives they would take while living in the altered timeline.
