Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures are aiming for their female-led “Ocean’s Eleven” spinoff to arrive in theaters June 8, 2018.
Titled “Ocean’s Eight,” the heist comedy stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling and Awkwafina. It’s expected to begin filming this month in New York with Gary Ross (“The Hunger Games,” “Pleasantville”) directing.
The film will face competition at the box office from Paramount Pictures’ “Transformers” spinoff centered around Bumblebee, which opens that same weekend, and will be sandwiched between Disney’s Han Solo “Star Wars” spinoff (May 25) and “Toy Story 4” (June 15). Also debuting that month will be the “Jurassic World” sequel (June 22) and an untitled Marvel film from Fox (June 29).
“Ocean’s Eight” was conceived by Steven Soderbergh, who directed 2001’s “Ocean’s Eleven” and its two sequels, along with franchise star George Clooney and late producer Jerry Weintraub.
A remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film of the same name, “Ocean’s Eleven” centers on slick con man Danny Ocean (Clooney), who after his parole from prison reunites with his ex-partner (Brad Pitt) to recruit a team to rob three Las Vegas casinos in one night. The film and its two sequels, 2004’s “Ocean Twelve” and 2004’s “Ocean’s Thirteen,” earned a combined $1.1 billion worldwide.
