In the year since its release, Alita: Battle Angel has gathered a cult following, with fans clamoring for a sequel. When director Robert Rodriguez was asked about the chances, he was rather optimistic -- citing streaming as a major factor in the potential for a sequel.

"I think anything is possible. Disney bought Fox, and they have Disney+, so that is worth the conversation," Rodriguez told Forbes in an interview. "I know other people would love to see another, and I would love to do another one. As far as where it would go or how it would be made, I think streaming has opened up many opportunities such as sequels. It’s already a pre-sold concept, it’s already got a built-in audience that wants to see it, and then it’s delivered to them in a way that’s the easiest for them to consume. So, it’s not a bad idea."

Based on the manga by Yukito Kishiro, Alita: Battle Angel focuses on a cyborg named Alita who is taken in by the brilliant Dr. Dyson Ido. Alita has no memories of her past but has incredible fighting skills. Rodriguez took up directorial duties, with original director James Cameron taking on a producing role and co-writing the script. Cameron had previously revealed that there were plans for two sequels, Alita: Fallen Angel and Alita: Avenging Angel.

Rodriguez recently directed a Season 2 episode of The Mandalorian, and wrote and directed We Can Be Heroes for Netflix. He will serve as an executive producer on the upcoming Disney+ series The Book Of Boba Fett.
