Aliens: Dark Descent takes players on a tactical squad adventure to quell a new xenomorph outbreak. According to the gameplay trailer, the title comes out sometime in 2023 on consules and PC. Players take a team of marines on missions to investigate the alien infestation. The clip gave fans their first look at gameplay and its dark surroundings.

Focus Entertainment wowed fans during Summer Games Fest 2022 with their reveal of Aliens: Dark Descent, a tactical squad-based game that will pit players against hordes of deadly Xenomorphs. The title promises to replicate the bombastic action seen in James Cameron's 1986 film Aliens, widely praised for its depiction of human-on-Xenomorph conflict, though the two are formally unrelated. Focus' new title is in the same vein as 2021's Aliens: Fireteam Elite, developed by Cold Iron Studios, though it will deliver more tactical gameplay akin to the famous XCOM series.

The first cinematic trailer for Aliens: Dark Descent premiered in June 2022 and immediately highlighted the game's oppressive lunar environment and looming alien threat. It shows a broken commander recounting a story of his team's infiltration of a moon base teeming with unseen enemies. As the team attempt to reclaim a comsat relay, a group of Xenomorphs swarms the group and attacks. The Xenomorphs leave the base in a bloody mess, with the commander describing them as "a new kind of evil." As the camera pans out, it's shown that the commander has been speaking to the two mutilated corpses of his teammates. The signature hiss of the Xenomorphs grows louder as they approach him and prepare to pounce.

Though the cinematic trailer set the scene for Aliens: Dark Descent, fans have yet to see any gameplay. Several media outlets were provided a hands-on with the game during Summer Games Fest 2022 and wrote positively about their impressions, though they couldn't capture any direct footage. Based on screenshots released by Focus Entertainment, the gameplay certainly resembles other RTS titles, with players able to direct their fireteam to tactical positions or engage with enemies. Death will also be permanent and alien threats will adapt intelligently to player behavior, majorly upping the ante. Fans expect to get an official look at some gameplay soon, with D23 perhaps a perfect time to premiere it.

Other Alien titles are also in the works, including a single-player survival horror titled Aliens developed by Servios and published by 20th Century that focuses on a "battle-hardened veteran" with a vendetta against the Xenomorphs. Could an Ellen Ripley comeback be at hand? Only time will tell.
