Ridley Scott's planned Alien prequels have been developing for quite some time now, but are the filmmaker and 20th Century Fox ready to pull the trigger on the fifth installment of the science fiction series? If nothing else, it appears that they're closer to securing an actress for the female lead.
Noomi Rapace, best known for playing Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its two sequels, is still considered the front runner for the role, with Scott himself reportedly "sweet" on the actress. But her casting is not considered official by any means, as Fox executives will reportedly have heavy involvement in the final decision, and the Swedish actress' English could be a factor working against her.
Deadline reports on some other candidates for the film's female lead, including the previously mentioned Natalie Portman and two new candidates, Abbie Cornish and Olivia Wilde. Both actresses have high concept action flicks headed to theaters in the next several months: Wilde appears as the female lead in Tron Legacy, while Cornish has a role in Sucker Punch.
